iPad Air 2 serious touch screen and battery problems

I have recently received an iPad Air 2 that a friend wants me to fix. When she got the iPad, brand new a couple of years back, she did not use it more than once and it was left in the box. She wanted to use the tablet again as her previous one broke.

As I was given the tablet to set up, I tried to power it on for the first time in two years. Nothing happened. I tired charging it for an hour, still nothing. But then, it miraculously came on and charged to full. Everything worked fine, until it just randomly shut off (he battery meter was still on 100%) and didn't want to come on again. Plugging it in, using different chargers, reseting it with the home/power button, nothing worked.

So she sent the iPad to a repair shop (not Apple certified as the Apple Store in our city could not do anything for her). Some way they got it to power on and charge it (they opened it up, I don't now what they did).

But when they sent it back, the touch screen did not work anymore! They told her that they need to replace the whole display now!! But she said no, and then gave the tablet back to mee to see if I can figure out what is wrong.

After I got it back, though, I found out that it still does not want to charge. The battery meter is also erratic. It stayed on 100% for two weeks (the tablet was never turned off), then when I finally decided to plug it in, it said charging 96%, the after I plugged it out again, it went back up to 100%. So naturally I restarted the iPad. Now suddenly it was on 16%!! I plugged it in once again -> 11%, plugged it out ->13% and so on.

I thought it was the software, so I did a complete restore and update with iTunes to IOS12. That did also not fix anything. I also opened the tablet up to see if the display cables for the touch screen was damaged (as the touch screen still does not work), but apart for the display cable connector cover that's missing (the repair shop did not put it back) everything looks fine. I also reseated the display cables.

I just want to know what the problem(s) might be so that I can know if I can replace the problematic parts, but I do not want to buy parts unnecessarily.

Is is possibly a faulty mother board(which may account for both problems), or is it possibly two separate problems.

Erratic battery meter is usually the symptom of a faulty battery, or a defective power management IC chip which requires micro-soldering to replace. The touchscreen issue attributed to either a faulty screen or defective touchscreen controller IC which also requires micro-soldering. The experts on this forum will give you specific steps to troubleshoot.

The charging issue sounds like a battery problem. I had a similar case with an iPad Air.

As far as the touch goes, did you inspect the cables themselves? Are any of the pins bent? It’s quite possible that they shorted the touch IC on the board. Any repair shop that leaves out brackets is highly suspect to me. It literally takes 30 seconds to screw that bracket back on.

Thanks for answering. The pins looked fine, but I'll look at it again. Just another question, is the "touch IC" on the screen itself or the logic board. I want to know what components I will likely have to replace

Logic board and it's not a DIY repair. It requires micro-soldering.

I completely understand. I am thinking of replacing the whole logic board. I just want to make sure that it is likely the logic board and not the screen itself, because if I need to replace the screen, logic board and battery, maybe it's better then to buy a whole new tablet

I agree. Maybe there is another shop that has a spare Air 2 screen they will let you test with or maybe purchase one from a supplier that has a low restocking fee in case you have to send it back.

The Touch IC's on the Air 2 are underneath a small shield near the battery connector. You can't see them or probe them without unsoldering the shield. I agree with Brian and @sammyz that the "charging issue" is most likely a bad battery. These batteries were not meant to sit around depleted for several years.

I also agree that shops that don't put back shields and screws are usually suspect as that is indicative of cutting corners. They probably damaged the screen during removal and now the Touch is gone.
