What is the display connector part on a late-2015 iMac?

I have a late-2015 iMac 5k with a broken display. It looks like the previous owner broke a couple pins on the logic board connector based on the couple missing pins on the original LVDS cable. Even when I connect a working display using a new cable it doesn’t function.

It’s not the display or the cable as I’ve tried both on another iMac 5K.

I’ve seen this (the logic board connector) referred to as a LVDS or a special eDP connector.

*Where can I buy this? And can I find someone to solder/replace it for me?

I’ve also tried reseating the cables with no luck. Is there something else I could try?

It’s one of the i7 models with m395x. I’d hate to junk it.

I'm going to take a wild guess and say its an A1419 "Core i7" 4.0 27-Inch. If this is the case, here's the part:

I'd rather not replace the whole logic board. Can anyone identify the connector part on the logic board?

Don't guess! Look on the bottom of the stand, get the serial number, plug it in here and tell us EXACTY what machine you have. We can then better advise you.

OK, now that we know what you have, i.e., an EMC 2834

There are three machines that carry that designation

Your machine is one of them. Processors run from a Core i5 3.2 GHz, or i5 3.3 GHz or a Core i7 4.0

Your serial number should have told you which one it is.

Since you said it has the M395X sounds like you have the high end machine

In this case it is well worth getting the connector replaced.

This connector is easily damaged when removing the cable incorrectly. Personally I use two people when connecting or disconnecting it. One to hold it open so the screen doesn’t drop and rip the cable out and the other (smaller person with smaller hands to actually remove or insert the cable).

The website is called ifixit and not iswappedit. So people should really focus on what was asked. The OP asked about the replacement connector. Of course he is fully aware that replacing the logic board will solve the problem but he would rather not chuck 350 at a 2nd hand logic board when the connector usually cost 5-10. Also this planet can do with less waste.. so we should really try and repair these things.

On topic, we have done few in our shop but could never find the actual connector sold separate. We usually salvage connectors from other boards that have other damage that is not repairable. It is an easy job though for anyone that has the right tools, should not take longer than 10 mins so it’s well worth it if you can find a donor board.

If I find the actual connector I will repost.

I had posted the maker in the original post I-PEX Connectors contact them for information of a local supplier!

I'm lucky! I have a couple of great suppliers who I get my parts locally. Not everyone has access so the cost of shipping then effects the cost.

Yes we did. The link in my post was where I got them from but I see that the listing is now down. I will have a look to see if the seller listed the connectors elsewhere and repost.

The iMac that came to us was experiencing no display symptoms. Chimed and worked on external but there was no image or backlight. The previous repairer used the wrong adhesive for the LCD after charging the HDD and the display fell off pulling the connectors out but somehow not damaging the board connectors (at least on the surface) . The diagnostic LEDs on the MLB were showing 1st LED on 2nd LED was half power lit after the chime and 3rd was off. Initially as the initial inspection was not showing any visible damage to the connector we have tested with a new display and with a new display flex with no joy.

After we replaced the connector all was well and the iMac passed all the tests.

Hope this helps someone with your diagnostic.

If you already tried using a working display and cable, it’s clearly the LVDS connection port on the logic board itself. Especially if you tried them on another 5K.

The only other option would be to replace the logic board.

Getting someone to repair the board for you will probably cost just as much as buying a brand new board. The only time you might consider going this route is if the board costs $1000+ to replace, in which case you’ll have to find a Mac Tech somewhere.

Thanks! That’s it. I’ve run the machine with an external thunderbolt display and diagnostics. It’s totally functional.

But the CPU will throttle to 800Mhz because the SMC doesn’t see the temperature sensor that’s coming from the display.

I have a friend that’s a tech who can do this type of repair. He needs to know what type of connector this is though.

I guess this quite common on previous iMacs as there are number of videos of techs repairing the LVDS connectors people pull off. Nothing I would try myself.

I believe it’s a 60-in eDP extended LVDS connector which apple used to get 5k working at 60hz. Do you have pointer to where i might able to source this? Or a pointer to what it exactly called.

This connector looks denser than the previous ones and on MacBook pros.

Not too sure how they compare to the MBPs. If you're determined to have your friend repair the connector, I'll tag two guys that know more than me on this kind of stuff. Although, if he's sure he can do the repair, I would hope he would know what kind of connector it is... Beyond me, but I would replace the board. @danj @mayer
