LG Dishwasher lights “fritzing” when on, making erratic noises

Our LG dishwasher —Inverter Direct Drive-- recently started having its control panels lights flickering/fritzing when turned on, will make erratic beeping noises and will do this when the dishwasher is running. The dishwasher turns off mid cycle when this happens as well.

Update (03/30/2019)

Thanks for the response! I’ve taken off the front door and the control panel- I’ve don’t see what looks like a control board.

The front control panel doesn’t seem to have anything significant standing out to me as damage

Hi,

What is the model number of the dishwasher?

Try switching off and totally disconnecting the power from the dishwasher for about 5 minutes and then reconnecting the power to check if has been reset back to normal operation.

tarafından

Hi- it’s a an LG LDF5545ST. I’ve already reset it several times by disconnecting it from the power.

tarafından

Breata Jessen any chance you can post some close ups of the board in the second picture?

tarafından

I have tried to get LG to send me a replacement board even under warranty and they refused unless i paid a technician to do it . I have a masters in Mechanical engineering and they wouldnt do it. time to switch brands.

tarafından

This happened to me. They cover the warranty of the part but not the tech. But won't send the part without a tech diagnosis. Stupid. I unscrewed the top panel and it was a loose wire. Problem solved. No new panel needed.

Breata Jessen  from your video (thanks for posting it) it looks like a bad control board. Your DW under normal circumstances would at least give you an error code etc., but your display goes all haywire. Time to look at the control board. This part ==>> LG DW Disassembly of the manual should help you getting there. Check your board

for obvious damage etc., and let us know what you find. You can always post some pictures with your question so we can try and help you further. Adding images to an existing question

Update (03/30/2019)

Breata Jessen you find the control board in the base assembly. K251 in the attached drawing. part number is EBR79609805 (or EBR79609803)since the manufacturer substituted part EBR79609803 with this part EBR79609805

@oldturkey03 thanks for your help!! So here’s the weird thing- I had previously turned the breaker off and unplugged the power to the dishwasher several times. Based on your suggestions, i took the front panel off, unplugged the control panel and probably let it sit for about half an hour while I contemplated my next move. I finally gave up, plugged everything in, and it works now! We’ve ran 2 cycles without any issues. Maybe a connection was loose?

tarafından

Easily possible. Probably not making good contact and thus causing your DW symptoms. Glad that it worked out, no matter what it was :-)

tarafından

@Breata Jessen is it still working for you? I’m having the same problem as you were having and I’m weighing my options of what to do....

tarafından

I had this same issue last year. Read this blog. It helped. We just took out the panel and put it back. It works fine since then.

Hello,

This is moisture getting into the control panel. This is a known LG issue, if it happens again call LG Customer Service even out of warranty and speak to a supervisor. They will install and ship a new control board with better moisture barrier.

Mario,

I also am having the same issues as Breata Jessen. Is the issue control panel (buttons) or board?

Thanks

Vince

tarafından

Mario, thank you.

Water vapor condensed behind the touch sensitive buttons. When shining light in between the double side tape and the touch sensors where the tape slightly peeled away, I could see a slight shimmer from the water that condensed behind there.

I used a heat gun to evaporate the water that was exposed, and then held the panel like a baseball bat to swing it around and use centrifugal force to swing the rest of the water out.

After doing this a few times, the buttons began to work better and better. When I was satisfied, I used hot glue to create a gasket and seal all the edges where water could get in.

I never removed the electronics, but everything is working again!

tarafından

We are having the same issue. We have taken off the assembly foe the motherboard and see no loose wires, no moisture. We do have a screw compartment holder that is broken, but seems to make no difference in the working components.

tarafından

I had the control board for my dishwasher (LDT5665ST) replaced at less than 2 years old. That was covered by LG and installed by one of their authorized service techs. Now, less than 2 years from that, I'm having the EXACT same issue. Now LG says it's too far out of warranty for them to cover. I'm very displeased that LG doesn't seem to want to stand behind their products, especially with such a known (and seemingly widespread) issue.

I work on these things every day for a living and I can tell you with 100% certainty that to resolve the issue you have to replace the control panel/user interface. Replacing the main PCB does nothing. According to LG this is caused from moisture getting in the control panel. I’m not sure if I buy that due to the fact that the electronic board(s) under the buttons are all covered with a 1/8” thick clear rubber coating to prevent moisture from getting to the panel. I normally just order the control panel assembly. It’s much easier to change than trying to change out the little boards underneath the user interface. It’s also cheaper. On this model, LDF5545ST, the part number from the dishwasher control panel assembly is: AGL 75172601. Basically you take the bolts out of the top part of the door and the panel assembly will come right out. Make sure the power is off when you do. Most of them there is only one plug.

So does the control panel not house a circuit board. I Havnt ripped mine apart yet but I’m getting same stuff happening. Lights flashing and beeping and then shuts off

tarafından

We just installed a whole new control assembly panel and it's still beeping and flashing lights. We have tried hitting Power/Start to try to get it into test mode. We have unplugged, shut the circuit off, still same thing. Panel just shuts off on it's own after 4minutes. We tested the voltage, doesn't seem to be an issue there. Any idea as to what else this could possibly be?

tarafından

I just replaced both main PCB and user interface board EBR80232403 and still have the same issue. Unit will light up all the cycles on touch panel for 3 seconds and then turn them off, none of the buttons are working. My dishwasher model#LUDP8908SN

I’ve found that running the dishwasher on a short “turbo” cycle gets my dishes clean and avoids the hours long cleaning process. After the cycle I immediately open the door to let the steam out. Occasionally I will use the “normal” cycle but still open the door to let the steam escape when finished.

The control panel (panel containing the buttons and lights) seems to be very susceptible to moisture, steam especially....clearly a design failure.

I removed the six screws holding the control panel in place and unplugged the multi-wire plug from the back of the board to free it from the machine.

I let it dry face down in the sunlight for a day, laid it in front of a heater vent at night, etc. to really dry it out well.

Before replacing it, I stretched a long piece of plastic food wrap across the opening where the panel is placed, snaked the wire and plug under the wrap, plugged in the panel, installed it with the 6 screws, then trimmed off all of the excess plastic wrap from around the edges carefully with a razor blade.

This prevents moisture from getting to the board.

Lastly, I open the door as soon as the "END" light is illuminated.

I switched to the "Turbo" cycle (59 minutes) to use the dish washer for the shortest period possible thus minimizing panel exposure to steam.

This seems to fix the issues!

It is now almost a year and I have never had another problem after this fix!

Great suggestion!!! I did something similar but put the plastic wrap directly on the circuit board. I also wrapped the harness cable to seal the connector as well. As a EE I believe the real issue here is the connector interface. The board itself is sealed with an epoxy to prevent water/steam getting to the control board. By the way, water on the control board would probably kill it. I believe the issue is the connector which isn't sealed at all. Steam is getting into the contacts and causes this strange behavior. Anyway, since installing the plastic wrap my dishwasher is working perfectly. This is definitely a design problem!!!!

Probably moisture in the electronics at top of door. Let dishwasher thoroughly air dry by leaving door open for several days. Then try a short cycle. When it completes do not let door stay closed, especially overnight. I believe there's a design defect or seal failure but once I understood what's going on and don't let it sit closed overnight, it works perfectly.

You might want to also detach the top panel and carefully reseat the plug connector(,s). IMPORTANT: Turn the circuit breaker off when doing this.

Thanks I will try that. We're so frustrated. Just bought it March 5th and it's so disappointing. LG is really no help. They didn't even mention that it could be moisture problem. Just told us to get a electrician. Nothing else is running when we run the dishwasher. Power should be fine.

I had mine replaced and then about a year later it started doing it again,I opened it back up and found a loose connection on one of the plugs. I pushed the plug back in place and it’s working again.

I took off the control panel and looked at the backside of all the mode select  push buttons.   I noticed that the power button connection had three points where it was soldered to the control panel.  One of the connections appeared to look kinda rusty.  I took a soldering iron and carefully heated up the old rusty solder, wiping it away with a toothpick.  Then, I refilled the joint with some fresh electronics solder.  I don't have much soldering experience at all, so it wasn't pretty.  But it was easy enough.  And now it has fixed the issue.  I am thinking of taking some hot glue or silicone and covering the solder points to protect them from the moisture.

In my situation my display was turning on and off very rapidly and most of the buttons were unusable.

I took off the front door, unplugged and inspected the jackplug and wiring to the display board and didn’t find anything damaged.

I also didn’t find any moisture behind the silicone sealant.

After reconnecting the jackplug the dishwasher ran through a complete cycle. There may have been some corrosion or buildup on the jackplug that was dislodged when I removed it.

If the moisture claim is true it may be that this jackplug not being protected is the culprit. I’m hesitant to put any protection over the wiring harness though. As it would make removing it a pain in the ass.

We have a LG LDFN4542B - after about 8 months, the control panel went nuts and we had moisture developing on the underside of the counter. Under warranty, a service tech replaced the entire control panel assy, latch, and duct. 6 months later, we have the problem again. I'm convinced the problem is that steam vents into the inside of the door, either out of the impeller motor itself or the hole in the side of the vent tube. Eventually this steam will damage the control panel, period. I covered up the vent hole and thought it had fixed it... apparently not. This is the closest discussion to what my symptoms are, so thank you all.

Our LG dishwasher fritzed its last fritz on Thanksgiving Eve. The junk man picked it up for scrap . Enjoying my new GE!

My LG dishwasher had so many issues after 14 months with an extended warranty, they replaced the whole unit.

Our new LG dishwasher runs for about an hour, then a bunch of lights in the panel start flashing, it plays its tune a few times then within a minute it quits. If we start it again to finish the fishes it will only run for a few minutes then quit. We never get an error code.

It has only done a full cycle twice in 3 weeks so I feel like taking it back to Costco but I would rather fix it. Too much trouble pulling it out.

Called LG and they say we should get an electrician. I hate to spend more money if the problem is the dishwasher.

If you can actually return it to Costco, I recommend doing that. Buy something else.

I agree! I have a little hope that this dishwasher will last the seven years that the LG tech told me is its lifespan. I spent $300 one time to replace the control panel, and I won’t do it again (tech also told me not to put any more $ into it in the future). It may be found a trash heap pretty soon.
