MacBook A1534 keyboard issues

Hi,

As the title suggest I'm having issues with my rMB 12 2016. It simply doesn't work.

Here are the symptoms:

  • The machine boots into the OS but really slowly
  • The backlight still lights up
  • The trackpad is working just fine.

I have replaced one of the cables (the wrong one as it turned out) and in the process, I forgot to disconnect the battery, my hand slipped, and shorted something on the motherboard. After that the trackpad stopped working, and the backlight died as well..

I took it to a repair shop, and after a few weeks they called me and told me that they can't repair it as they can't get the needed part for it.

Today, when I picked up the laptop I took it home, and I opened it up myself, because something felt weird. Turns out, the cable that connects the trackpad and the keyboard to the motherboard was torned and put in the wrong way. Luckily I had a replacement for it, as that's the cable I ordered earlier.

After some time, the laptop booted into the OS and the backlight was on, and the trackpad was working again. Unfortunately the keyboard is still not registering anything.

However, when I turn on the laptop (the power button works) and I try to turn on Caps lock, it lights up green for a second and then the light goes out.

If I boot to recovery, and asks for my WiFi password, the trackpad is laggy but works and when I try to type in the password with the keyboard it does work, but it seems like that all the keys are stuck, because as soon as I press a button, it acts like as if I keep on pressing it.

What happens when you use an external keyboard (USB or Bluetooth) ?

Hey @danj

An external keyboard works perfectly fine, both usb and bluetooth.

If it were my Macbook, I would replace the keyboard … but BE VERY CAREFUL with the connector port that the keyboard cable plugs into … they usually have a tiny plastic “blade” that you flip up to release the tension off the cable so you can pull it out … that little door blade is very fragile … i broke mine once and was forever on an external keyboard until one day i had to replace the motherboard and got a new connector (obviously) ….

Look for video on how to replace the keyboard or the ifixit pics … know the process before you remove the first screw.

I agree the system needs a new keyboard or whats easier replacing the full uppercase assembly.

Thank you for the reply guys. I ended up replacing the keyboard with a new one (took some time and patience). After that I got backlight but the keys are still not functioning. The worst part is that after a few restarts and smc/pram resets, the machine is not turning on anymore.. :(

Is there any solution to this problem yet?
