Why is the laptop shutting down?

**NOTE: The seller included a 45W charger and did not make right on it. I need to get a 60W unit - I know.**

I’ve had this MacBook for a little bit and it still has thermal problems. At first I tried to repaste it and this did not work - even with a quality paste. The notebook is still shutting down under load on the charger.

I don’t believe it’s the power adapter at fault since it appears to run fine (although the notebook says 16.5V/3.65A max) despite being 14.5V/3.1A at most). I may try a knockoff adapter to see if it still overheating as a diagnostic step, but I have ordered a heatsink as a speculative diagnosis.

Since it’s so old, my budget for repairing the laptop is 30-40% of the average the value of the 2006 2121 machines, so $30-40 USD ($100 for reference). The reason for this is I can find a 2008-2009 model for about as much as a major part, should the problem be expensive to fix.

@mayer here is the CoconutBattery info you want:

What does CoconutBattery telling us?

Is the battery even holding a sizable charge?

tarafından

@danj It holds a perfect charge but can't charge because of the adapter. I checked when I got it because a lot of sellers lie or test it for 30 seconds and say it works.

I ordered the heatsink since it hit 165F even with new thermal paste. That's also why I don't think it's the power supply but it may not be helping.

tarafından

Please post your results after running Coconut Battery. That 45 watt adapter, if it is Apple will charge it up just fine it it is working. Do not use a knockoff adapter.

tarafından

Yeah... I was given a knockoff. Needless to say I ordered a genuine one on eBay (used; I don't trust anything new or open box) since it wasn't fixed soon enough. Yes, it will count against the parts cost limit unless it's a common part I can reuse so I may give the adapter a pass since I can use it with another 13" Mac or even an Air. It won't work for the 85W 15/17" ones, but I've found most of them are not in good shape. Ended up paying $12 for the OEM 60W on eBay. Would have gotten a OEM 85W but $12 (with free 2 day shipping as an upgrade) wasn't bad.

To put it in context I mentioned the knockoff in I meant for testing - I wouldn't use one of those adapters long term. I don't leave this one plugged in unless I'm using it because I know these adapters well enough to know better. The problem is the new price kills these machines, so it's used or garbage knockoff unless you own a Mac WORTH having a new one to justify the cost.

Aftermarket chargers are mostly awful, they make sparks, may break easily and all the rest, but they charge batteries nevertheless. It seems you have a fried charging circuit here, battery shows good health condition and machine runs..that leaves no room to speculation, it's not a charger or battery issue. If you think about a replacement you may as well take in consideration the white A1342 macbook, it's pretty cheap but it's a state of the art C2D, nice performance and may run high sierra flawlessly. Probably one of the best price/quality ratios for a Mac right now.

I'm leaning more towards the Pro 13" 2009-10; possibly a 2011. I've always liked them more, but can tolerate the MB. The plastic unibody isn't out of consideration, but I've always preferred the Pro (despite the premium). Part of that is the lack of firewire (not a deal breaker, but a huge negative).

The reason I'm thinking I'm better off replacing it is the price of a good notebook compared to the repair work it almost certainly needs. I still need to find a actually genuine power supply I can trust to be real so I don't have a 3rd one on death row due to the cost of repair.

I'm trying to get the fake used charger replaced so I at least known I didn't go down without trying even though I can tell it's probably another 3rd party charger casualty.

What do you think the odds are I got lucky if I can find a real Apple charger rather then some high grade clone? I have the data.

As soon as I get a refund, I'm considering a second attempt with an 85W.

tarafından

@nick I believe I shared my view in an earlier thread about chargers..I'm generally in favor of used Apple chargers, unless they are treated badly they last more or less forever and I find them a pretty good value for money. What I fear most are the fake "genuine" ones, with or without the cloned shell those are the worst ones that make sparks and kill components without mercy. Unless you're planning to buy a 15/17" in the future, 85W charger wouldn't be necessary, but if you find a good deal why not ? In my experience eBay is a pretty decent marketplace to find used ones if you have a bit of a feel for reliable sellers :)

tarafından

The 85W is an insurance policy if I find a deal on another 17" Pro or possibly a high res 15" and it comes with a killer clone.

This one I got was one of those clone shell specials that was sold as genuine used...

tarafından

@nick You could now find pretty cheap 15" Pros with bad graphics, some with high res screen too..unless you have special needs and can settle without external monitor output and just the integrated Intel HD 3000 that might be a nice solution too. Btw..I purchased a "genuine" new one from one of the most world reputable chinese sellers a few weeks ago..do I need to mention how disappointed I was ?

Did you have the power adapter plugged in? If you did your charger is not charging at all! I would clean the MagSafe connector on the system and you might need a new one. I often see the plastic has fatigued so the contact pins don’t touch MacBook MagSafe DC-In Board

I got a knockoff 45W with the notebook; I grabbed a OEM 60W online (and it isn't yet another fake). If that doesn't work, I'll have a look at the DC-In board. That said I was careful to keep it unplugged unless I was using the notebook (and limited how much I use it) as a temporary precaution until I could get a real one.

It looks fine to my eyes (and feels fine judging by how it feels). The contacts also look okay and were cleaned as well. It has the standard MagSafe dirt, but it's not on the contacts; just the sticker that's cosmetic. I cleaned it up as well as I can and I'll see if it persists with a OEM 60W; I can't get it to charge with the 45W adapter. If the adapter doesn't work, it probably has a bum battery like the rest of these MacBooks.

I'm getting an orange light with the new charger (60W) for a few seconds and then it goes green. It does try and charge the battery, so it was a problem with that stupid 45W. May have even fixed the overheating but I'll probably hold onto the heatsink for $4.

I need a way to force it... It may come to me how I can force the matter. SMC and PRAM reset didn't help. I'd try a cheap knockoff charger but I know what those do a little too well from seeing how they damage equipment. It's a 3rd party battery, so I'm not setting the bar high on purpose.

What does CoconutBattery show now?

Take a snap with the MagSafe connected and a second after disconnecting it giving it a bit of time to recognize its been disconnected.

tarafından

The notebook doesn't stay on once you remove power. As soon as I sort the crashing out...

OK still do the plugged in test
