How can I fix my error while creating a bootcamp partition?

When trying to create partition I get this error message :

Back up the disk and use Disk Utility to format it as a single Mac OS Extended (Journaled) volume. Restore your information to the disk and try using Boot Camp Assistant again.

But when i check my drive under disk utility it says that my drive is already in MacOS External (journaled). What could the problem be? I posted this previously but I haven't got any suggestions. I currently have no partitions. My time machine is dead, can I re-format without back-up? If I don't have any partitions why wont some files transfer? I'm new to Mac OS so please be as descriptive as possible, thanx. by the way, im trying to create a partition for Windows7, if that's of any help.

I've been unable to format or partition several drives, 2.5 & iPod drives that have been previously formatted MS DOS (fat).

I think I may have an idea for you...

is this the error message you get?

if so, I've heard that bootcamp needs a large enough unfragmented chunk of disk space on your drive to be able to set up your Windows partition, otherwise it stops with this error. it's trying to tell your existing OS X installation is fragmented and not enough space for a contiguous 2nd partition.

the remedy seems to be

1) first back up your entire drive to an external disk. personally, I recommend using SuperDuper!

Or, you mentioned something about Time Machine - you could also just do a full TM backup.

2) reboot from OS X install disk and now reformat your drive as HFS extended (journaled).

3a) if you have a TM backup, next install a fresh copy of OSX on your clean drive and then restore the rest of your apps and user data from your TM backup when the installer asks you if you want to do that

3b) OR if you don't have TM backup -- instead of reinstalling the OS, just use SuperDuper to clone the external drive back to your internal hard drive

after (3a) or (3b) you should now have your OS X stuff back on the drive but now all free space should be contiguous. now try re-running Bootcamp Assistant to create your Windows partition

good luck, let us know if this helps

by the way, i see SuperDuper is pretty particular about which external drives its compatible with. Do u recommend any?

Hi, I suspect that you have a bigger problem. So better bakup your data to an external harddrive (not with timemachine). Then I recommend a fresh installation of your system from DVD (Leopard?) with a fresh formatting during installation. Dont forget all updates via software-update before going on.

After that your bootcamp should work without problems.

good luck,

Lol actually my solution is quite simple.(I don't know if it will work for you but it did for me)

1)Restart your mac, and after the white screen pops up, hold the shift key(allows you to boot in safe mode)

2)Create a windows partition in the safe mode, but don't install windows.(For whatever reason if you insert the windows installation disk in your mac, it would not show up on the desktop if your in safe mode.)

3)Restart your mac normally now, and open boot camp assistant. Then when it asks you whether to create a new partition or install windows, you insert the windows installation disk, click install windows and Bingo!!

Hope that it can work for you.

Intensity is right; this worked out perfectly. Both errors for Extended Journal and fragmented space didn't come up when I was in Safe Mode. This was the quickest and most efficient way to get the partition onto the Mac. Thanks a bunch!

I found another solution. It may take time though. You need to try reinstalling windows by using bootcamp and then uninstall it. When you ask bootcamp to delete the partition used for windows, it will also "delete" the free space. It worked for me.
