Hi @Victoria Cooley,
Use a mini HDMI to HDMI cable to connect the tablet to the HDMI port on a TV.
In the TV use the input button on the remote to select the appropriate HDMI input on the TV.
In the tablet go to Settings -> Device -> Display -> HDMI settings, to turn on the HDMI connection.

It is possible you need a mini HDMI adapter. This will have regular HDMI on one end and a mini version on the other.
This way you can plug it in to your HDMI plug on your TV.

Presumably when you say "I did all that and still nothing" you mean that you checked that it was setup as per the answer in the Most Helpful Answer below, is this correct?
Have you tried a different cable between the TV and the tablet?
Have you tried a different HDMI port on the TV?
Have you proved that the HDMI ports on the TV are still working by connecting another device, e.g. a DVD player and checking if they do?
Have you tried connecting the tablet to the HDMI port on another TV or monitor?
What have you tried to prove where the problem is, TV, cable or tablet?
