External ssd not showing in startup disk but am able to boot from it

Just got a new old stock 2017 iMac 21.5 - 3GHz Core i5, 8gb RAM and a terribly slow internal drive.

I have cloned the old ssd from my aged Macbook Pro onto a Samsung T5 portable SSD and can successfully boot the iMac upon startup by holding the option key and selecting the SSD, but when I go to the Startup Disk trying to have the iMac automatically use the SSD to boot the computer, the Samsung T5 doesn’t appear in Startup Disk. The T5 shows up in disk utility and it sure looks like it’s mounted and I can access data from it, but I’ve not figured out how to make it the startup disk.

I called Apple support (har, har) and they were unhelpful.

Anyone here have any ideas?

Thanks

Jeff

It sounds like you’re hitting a compatibility issue between the macOS your laptop is using (cloned to SSD) and what your new (used) iMac requires and/or the act of cloning messed up the needed boot file on the SSD.

How about reformatting your T5 SSD and do a proper OS install on it. Remember you need GUID partition mapping and ideally you want HFS+ file system Vs the newer APFS. That way its more useful on other systems.

I would stick with 10.12. 4 Sierra so you can get HFS+ or jump to 10.14 Mojave if you want to use APFS. I don’t recommend using High Sierra.

I’m not sure I follow why you need to use the external SSD Vs just reformatting the internal drive and installing a fresh OS on it. HDD’s over time get fragmented so the constant churning of adding and deleting files cause this because of its track and sector architecture unlike SSD which are block based.

If you have a good internet connection why don’t you just run the internet recovery service?

Hi Dan, Thanks so much for replying with your thoughts and ideas on this. Much appreciated!

A couple of follow up questions/clarifications if you don’t mind….

* I could reformat the SSD, but figured if I cloned the MacBook Pro where the image came from using SuperDuper, I was good to go, no? I guess not as I can’t assume anything, but figured I had given myself a good chance of this working as intended

* Regarding using Sierra vs High Sierra, unfortunately, due to some software I use, stepping back to Sierra would likely cause unintended consequences more difficult to navigate.

* You asked why I’m using an external SSD instead of the internal iMac drive. Well, the internal drive is horribly slow - it’s the 5400rpm standard hdd. It’s hard to describe how bad this drive is in terms of usable everyday speed, but Apple should have retired this drive 8 years ago.

* Last question/point - the reality is that booting from the external SSD when I boot up by holding the option key is an inconvenience, but it’s truly not a huge issue. Are you aware of any issues I might encounter if I keep using an external drive to boot?

Thanks again!

I haven't used any of these cloning apps for the last 10 years! They don't really work terribly well. I use Apples utilities: Disk Utility and Migration Assistant thats it! Find the nearest trash bin and toss your cloning apps away.

If you can't use Sierra then jump to Mojave. But be sure you really need it most apps work just fine in Sierra.

If you want a faster system I would just bite the bullet and swap out the HDD for a SSD iMac Intel 21.5" (Late 2012-2019) SSD Upgrade Kit and here's the guide iMac Intel 21.5" Retina 4K Display (2017) Hard Drive Replacement Go with the 1 TB drive and if you haven't go with 16 GB of RAM.

You need to realize Apple needed a lower cost version of the 21.5" iMac which is why they came out with the HDD model. I don't recommend it, I recommend going with the factory Blade PCIe SSD option as the better setup and then if you need deeper storage go with a second drive adding the SATA drive or external drive.
