Graphics Upgrade for Late 2006 iMac

Hello,

I have a late 2006 24” iMac with the 7300 GT 128MB. I know you can upgrade to a 7600 GT 256MB, but I was curious if I could use a ATI Radeon 2400 XT 128MB or the ATI Radeon 2600 Pro 256MB.

I know all these cards are laughable in performance these days, but I was looking to see if I could breathe a little more life into my iMac with a better card. I know where to find the 2400XT for iMacs so that won’t be an issue,

I’m just curious to see if it would work, as both systems have the same form factor card. Thanks in advance.

To enhance your performance I think you would be much, much happier with a RAM upgrade from 1 to 4 GB

RAM Type:PC2-5300 DDR2Min. RAM Speed:667 MHz

Details:Supports 667 MHz PC2-5300 DDR2 SDRAM (200-pin SO-DIMM).

and a hard drive upgrade to an backward compatible SSD.

The SSD can be removed later and installed in a newer model, so you don’t lose it.

What is a backwards compatible SSD? I bought a Seagate Barracuda 1TB HDD, will that work?

tarafından

An SSD is a Solid Sate drive with no moving patts. The Barracuda has platters that data is written to mechanical with a moving head and is much slower

tarafından

@mayer - This system only has a 1.5 Gbps SATA I port he would need a Samsung 860 EVO SSD as its one of the very few that support this older SATA I standard.

Make sure the version of Seagate Barracuda you bought offers SATA I support. Here's the older spec sheet for it Seagate Barracuda HDD

tarafından

@danj I bought an ST1000DM003 1TB HDD. I tried to install Tiger but it gave me an input output error and the only one that ended up working was Snow Leopard. Why is this? This was in Disk Utility in Tiger.

tarafından

@ashneale23 - You're hitting a size limit between HFS (Tiger) Vs HFS+ (Snow Leopard) volumes and file systems.

If you put your wayback hat on you'll see the drives back then where only 320/400 GB as being the largest you could get. Such a a different world from today ;-}

Frankly, I would run OS-X Lion (10.7.5) on this system.

MXM boards are not always changeable. Here’s a bit more Mobile PCI Express Module

Sadly the newer MXM boards are not compatible. You need to stick with a MXM 2.1 spec’d board.

So what then might work with the computer? I know that it has to be an Apple Card, so what would fit? Would any other cards from later iMacs fit? Are there any other options besides a Mac card?

tarafından

Finding the correct MXM board will be a task. Are you sure its worth the effort? This series used CCFL backlight which dim as they age and you can't run any newer macOS's on it and its very limited CPU & memory.

I would just leave it be and use it as it is now.

@danj I'd like to find something for it thats better if possible though. I'd certainly be interested in any pointers. Thanks

This is the only way I can see you achieving this: iMac Alu 24" Logic Board 3.06GHz (09) ($130) as well as the needed GPU board:

661-4990 - MXM III, M76XT 256MB GDDR3 V-RAM ($250)

661-4991 - MXM III, G92GT 512MB GDDRS V-RAM ($380)

So as you can see it will cost you between $380 to $420 its just not worth it! I'll warn you I never done this so you might hit a road block or two, needing to switch-out other parts as well.

@danj Ok, I see your point
