Add sensor mod to Honeywell Lyric water detector to sense a power loss

Using an off the shelf Honeywell Lyric water leak detector (the one with WiFi) I want to replace the plug- in water sense cable with an active circuit that will detect a power loss (of 110vac from a receptacle) by tricking the detector to think it’s a leak, and send a message to my cell phone via WiFi.  It is to be used to make sure my separate Freezer in the garage does not lose power.   It is not for a total power loss.    Lyric was not in a Choose Device list, so I had to choose something!

Have you looked at other devices which are designed to do this?

I would look at something like these than try to re-design a device.

The Motorola power sensor uses AT&T cell service. We have virtually no coverage with this service.

Also, other power monitors also use cell service, which is very limited where I live, and has an ongoing cost associated with it.

The Lyric uses WiFi. I kind of assume the Lyric senses an impedence change in the external sensing cable when it is wet. I can easily design an active circuit that would emulste this condition. Also, the cost of a Lyric is very low (< $80). I'm just newely retired, so it's also a fun little project. What I'm looking for is exactly the conditions of the sensing cable that causes it to determine that it has detected water. Maybe a Lyric engineer can comment.

I'm not interested in a power sensor that just produces an audible alarm. I want a cell phone alert, so I don't have to be nearby.

@maxdog303 - OK, the Eaton unit I believe is WiFi like the Samsung unit so you still will need a means to get signal to your cellular carrier. I'm sure you can find a better solution than building your own. I have a friend who is really into HomeKit and home automation let me ask him if he has any ideas. Stay tuned!

@maxdog303 - Had a chance to talk to my friend who's more into this stuff than me last night. He was recommending AVTech products: Sensor catalog

Using: Room Alert 3E or Room Alert 3 Wi-Fi Monitor

As well as: Mini UPS with Power Sensor or RMA-PS1-SEN Power Sensor.

Ron told me the system can send out a text message via the internet and offers a built-in Web server which also logs the events which can be accessed within the local network or if setup via the internet.

maxdog303  the part to be hacked would be the signal cable. You would need to see if it get’s some signal from the Lyric or if it is a simple off/on sensor cable. If it is a simple off/on situation you could get this done with a relay board. First we have to determine how this cable works. Let’s see if I can find a unit to teardown and see what is going on with it. In the meantime can you use a meter and check the cable itself? How many contacts are on the cable where it connects to the unit?

Guys, Yes, I did make a resistance measurement on the sensor cable when it was dry and wet. The DVM I used couldn't sense a difference. Both cases looked like an open. I'm pretty sure it is going to be a resistance difference anyway. This thing can put enough 6' cables in series to sense up to 500' worth. Anywhere along that stretch will cause an alert if it gets wet. It just must sense a very very large resistance. It can't be capacitance based on that info.

I'd love a teardown done on the Honeywell Lyric water detector! Remember, I just need to know how it senses the cable is wet. The teardown won't give us that answer. I really need a schematic of it.

Agree with the schematics but you and I know that some manufacturers (most) guard those like it's Fort Knox. I am more interested in where the "signal" for the cable turns it on and off, thus bypassing the cable and connecting it to a small power failure circuit.

Check on here and see if your cable might just fit into that category https://www.wateralert.com/water-leak-se... or this https://www.waterdamagedefense.com/colle... which would be easier.

Yeah, I know getting a schematic would probably be difficult. I think the cables that come with the Honeywell Lyric are similar to the ones in your links. The cable is completely passive. Circuitry in the Lyric detects the cable is in a little water. I just don't know the sensing metrics. That's what I need to know.

How much in a rush are you with this project? I am trying to get more info and see if I can get one of the units as well as those cables to tear it down. Maybe we can figure it out.
