What device or adapter could I buy for 4k support

Is there a preferably compatible adapter or other device, which would enable the laptop to output in 4k - via Mini Displayport?

My monitor supports 3840x2160@60hz via Mini Displayport, but only @30hz via HDMI. However: the built in HDMI is useless in this regard.

Since I am perfectly fine with the performance other than the HDMI output, I thought perhaps there is some USB3.0-compatible device I could use for that matter. Or do I have to buy a new laptop altogether?

One way to get 4K from your laptop is to use an external video adapter which usually connects to your computer via USB. But these external adapters typically don’t work all that well, and the video quality won’t be much better than the native resolution from your laptop’s HDMI or DisplayPort output. Keep in mind your 4K monitor works just fine with a lower resolution input and you likely won’t see much difference when trying to scale up to 4K. The HDMI and DisplayPort outputs are virtually identical in terms of signal protocol, but as you’ve mentioned there might be different resolution and refresh rate options depending on what output you use. There are plenty of adapters and cables that go from HDMI to DisplayPort and vice-versa. Note that even if you use the monitor’s DisplayPort input, your computer might not fully support a 60Hz signal. Just like the resolution , however, you probably won’t even be able to see a noticable difference in the refresh rates (even with high FPS gaming). I’d recommend experimenting with all the available output options on your laptop to see which one looks best on your monitor. Don’t worry about scaling up to 4K. If you REALLY want or need 4K, then it’s probably time for a PC upgrade.

Well, finally I decided for the latter: I upgraded my laptop. The core problem is that even if I used a HDMI to DisplayPort converter, I probably could get 2560x1440@55hz at best (which is what I got at some point from the HDMI - with custom settings in the iGPU driver, though I believe it was removed later on and impossible (without e.g. PowerStrip) on Windows 10).

The other problem I had, was, that even if I had gotten 4k@60hz, I doubt that the built-in dGPU (some NVidia Mobile GTX6x0), would accelerate Photoshop.

Overall I think the UX32VD is great for anything Full-HD (except gaming, of course), but really bad for beyond that resolution. I really was fooled by that mini-VGA-connector, which did not use even once (in the 5 years, that I owned the laptop). So if one only needs Full-HD, it's a nice laptop - but beyond that... no.

Sold mine for a few buck to a friend of my wife - she only needed something to watch Netflix on (on internal display). So the laptop does very well at that.
