Replaced coil heater in freezer, now it's getting too hot?

So I have a side by side fridge and the heater to the coil recently went out. I replaced it, but now it seems to be getting too hot. The vent above it goes directly into where the ice maker stores the ice and it's partly melting the ice, causing everything in the fridge to be frosted. Anyone know what the deal is?

@tea9000 what exact model is your refrigerator? Sounds like your thermostat is on the fritz and not telling the heater to slow down

It's a GE side by side refrigerator. So the thermostat for the fridge and freezer works, it's keeping everything cold. Is there a separate thermostat for the coil?

Hi @tea9000 ,

The model number will help to find the parts in the refrigerator.

There usually is a defrost thermostat (or thermistor) in most fridges that stops the temp in the freezer from going above 32 F during the auto defrost cycle so as to prevent damage to the evaporator unit. It signals the control board to stop the cycle and start the compressor again to drive down the temps

The model number is GSH25KGRE BB

Hi @tea9000 ,

There is a defrost thermostat / part #240 that you can check. It looks like it is a bi-metal sensor type. Use an Ohmmeter to test it.
