Using a bootable USB to run the macOS

Hi all.

My 2011 iMac, I just wiped the whole hard drive and went into recovery mode to reinstall the OS, when trying to install Yosemite via recovery mode it says “A required download is missing” and the instillation does not start, and I am connected to wifi.

So then I try internet recovery to reinstall MacOS Lion, I get as far as accepting the T’s and C’s but when the download starts it says “Time remaining 2,347,216, and so on” So a ridiculous time, then I get another error and it stops.

So I downloaded the OS of Apples website (https://support.apple.com/en-nz/HT206886) and load it onto a USB stick, I also formatted the disk as “ Mac OS Extended (Journaled)” as I was told to, then I put the OS onto the stick, plug it into the Mac and start it up holding down "Option” The only disk that comes up is “Recovery HD” and the USB does not show up.

But when I start it up and go into disk utility it says its there. Can someone please advise a way I can reinstall the OS?

Thanks heaps! Also attached are screenshots of the OS I got from Apples website and the USB settings.

It looks like you hit a few whammies here!

First Apple has a certificate within all its installers which have an expiration date. So when you use it beyond its window of life you’ll hit a few different error conditions depending on the version, in your case: Lion & El Capitan.

Here’s a good writeup that explains things as Apple messed up even on its newer OS’s someone forget to set the certificate properly as Apple keeps the last three and the current macOS alive!

If you've got an old macOS install image, it will probably stop working today While this covers Sierra and newer its the same for your older OS-X or macOS versions.

Here we need to alter the systems date so the installer is fooled into thinking its back in time! So in the case of El Capitan you’ll need to roll the year back to 2016

Here’s how!

Now your properly setup OS installer USB thumb drive will work! So we still need to review that aspect. Follow this guide: How to make a bootable OS X 10.11 El Capitan installer drive

Frankly, unless you have some older software which doesn’t run on anything newer I would recommend upgrading to Sierra! Here’s the needed updated OS installer so you don’t need to mess with the date setting at all! How to upgrade to macOS Sierra Jumpdown to Step 4 for the download. Then setup your USB installer following this guide: How to create a bootable macOS Sierra installer drive.

OK, but why don’t go higher? High Sierra also works doesn’t it?

This gets into the major change Apple did with its file system jumping from HFS+ to APFS. As your system is a SATA based drive system APFS has its issues running on SATA drives. Which is why I prefer staying with Sierra to any of the newer macOS’s.

If you had a PCIe/AHCI or PCIe/NVMe based drive system it makes a lot of sense going with APFS! And I would go with Mojave over High Sierra!

This is great! Although I have the computer factory reset and can only access recovery mode, Can I change the date and time via the terminal? If so please explain how.

Cheers
