Home button errors continue after a home button replacement

I recently purchased an iPhone 7 which required a battery change due to its age. I had changed the battery on my previous phone (iPhone 6s) and proceeded to do the same with the new phone.

After changing the battery, the home button doesn’t work at all, including 3D touch and touch ID. Reading online, it said that the most likely issue was due to ripping the home button flex cable, therefore, I ordered a replacement home button to return the functions (apart from Touch ID).

After replacing the home button purchased from Amazon, no functions had returned and it was still unusable. This has got me thinking that the issue is not with the home button itself but a different connector within the phone?

I have put the original home button back in and my next step is to replace the LCD with the hope that I can use the original button.

What cable controls the home button functions? - I wanted to double-check, is it the LCD that should be replaced, or a different flex cable? What do you think?

Thanks in advance.

On iPhone 7 and above, Home button simply cannot be repaired if the button unit is damaged beyond recovery. Nothing will work with the replacement button.

If the 3D Touch doesn’t respond as well, it is likely due to torn cable on the screen. There are two cables on the lower half of the display, one for display power and signal, the other for 3D Touch and home button. That cable has a right-angle turn that is super fragile. You should never subject it to ANY tension. Open up the phone just enough to access the cable bracket, unscrew the screws then disconnect the cables before pulling the screen any further.

Opening up the phone flat like iFixit does in their repair guide is wrong, it is highly likely to damage the cables in that way.

If the cable is damaged, for regular DIY repairs, all you can do is to replace the whole screen.

Do you think it may be an error with the LCD considering the original and replacement button did not work? Do you think changing the screen would fix it?

only the original home button or a genuine obtained and synced to the phone from apple (costing upwards of £300) ill fully function as long as the cables aren’t damaged inside the phone, if the option of going to apple isn’t then you can buy a replacement home button like you have done off the internet but it will only ever work with a passcode, there is one you can buy which connects via Bluetooth to the phone which will at least stop the error messages throwing up saying that they can’t be activated.
