Late 27" iMac 2009 recognizes only 2 ram slots. The saga continues...

Curiouser and curiouser.

OK, so the saga continues. I ordered a set of Crucial 8GB SODIMMs, I installed them in the back (toward the stand)and received the following. One tone, a five-second pause, repeat. I shut it down and moved the ram to the two front slots, restarted and BINGO, 16GB showing up and running beautifully.

So I decided to get brave  (stupid) and moved them to be stacked, in both the left side slots, then I did the same on the right, again both times started right up and recognized both sticks.

Put them back in the "back" slots only get the tone. No Mac start, only tone, and black screen.

So now I am more curious, so I put two 4GB sticks in stacked on the left side, and the 8GB on the right, now I get 24GB GB ram recognized.

Switch them so the 8GB on the left, and 4GB on the right, again all 24GB are recognized.

And here is the kicker they are ALL PC1333 DDR3. OWC - 4GB x 2 and Crucial - 8GB x 2..

I may try a few last configurations just to satisfy my morbid curiosity and will update in the next few days, after running it as is.

With all 4 slots full, it does not matter if the 8GB and 4GBs are in the left or right, it works.

So now it is running dandy, don't know why or how, but there it is.

Also of notice, I installed Sierra, a clean install. Not sure if that made any difference. But, two ram slots still won't recognize any memory if they are the only two installed. But with four (two 4GB's and two 8GB's it runs great. Go figure.

This is the revised placement. been running fine all 24GB is recognized. Not sure why it is working, but changes;

Sierra instead of El Capitan,

PC1033 vs 1066 ram,

And two new 8GB sticks plus two original 4GB sticks. Go figure.

You discovered the differences between Bank & DIMM !! This is a bit of a black art. Looking at your systems hardware report (About This Mac > System Report) you’ll find under memory you’ll find this:

Generally the rule of thumb is you want to populate the Bank with the same DIMM modules. What is yours showing? Post it here for us to see Adding images to an existing question

Putting the ram in previously as per Apple specs did not make any difference. In fact, I still get the "no Ram tone" if I set it as per Apple specs. BUT now when I populate all the slots as per Apple specs (side by side) or stacked (not recommended) it is working.

Not sure if it is by installing Sierra (rather than El Capitan), or the new ram sticks. Which are also NOT what Apple recommends. 1033 vs 1066.

So yes definitely "dark arts" indeed.

Thanks for the info.
