Random Black Screen Appearing

2013 Macbook Pro, 16 gig memory, 256 SSD Hard Drive. It worked fine for several months. Then randomly started going to a completely black screen. The keyboard still lit up, and the Apple logo on the cover is still lit.

Have checked screen saver, auto screen power off, reset SMC and PRAM, ran fan diagnostics, checked for overheated using temp diagnostics, have completely erased and re-installed Catalina.

After a hard shutdown, the screen comes back on and may go a few minutes or a few hours before doing it again. If the computer is turned off for a full day, then it will not happen for several hours, before starting the same inconsistent black screen. It does not seem to be related to any specific software.

The Battery is getting up there! Just shy of 600 cycles of the 1000 lifespan. Even still its not at a point of failing.

This appears to be a deeper logic board issue with one of the current sense lines. It will need to be looked at by someone with the skills to debug the logic board. Or, your other option is replace the logic board.

Hey Dan,

Thanks for your input.

I’m actually hoping the answer by Mike Sims I just found way down at the bottom of this page may be the fix:

MacBook Pro 15 inch Late 2013 suddenly turns off

As other users have mentioned, it does not do it when reinstalling the OS and some posts I've seen around the net say it started happening to them after upgrading to High Sierra or later OS.

Anyway, I’ll see how the trick mentioned above works. Worst case, I’ll have to consider hardware repair.

Thanks much!
