Whirlpool WRS555SIHZ00 not making ice

I have a Whirlpool Side-by-Side (exact model in Title) and the ice maker stopped working but the water pressure appears to be adequate. I have tried a couple things already…

1) checked the on/off switch (it was on, still not working)

2) checked water pressure - appears to be okay

3) filter was changed about 1 month and half ago

4) took out the ice that was in the tray (no blockages that would be causing it not to drop ice in the bin)

5) took the bin and ice maker out completely and checked for any frozen components (none found)

6) minimal ice build up on water tube that dispenses into the maker (cleared out)

7) removed water filter (recommended elsewhere to see if the filter was clogged, not sure if this will help or not)

That is pretty much all I have been able to do so far. I do not hear any noises or anything coming from the maker at all. I don't want to condemn the ice maker yet, especially if it may be something else. Any ideas?

Thanks!

How deep does the ice go into the water line? Mine made a 1/2 tray of ice & that was it. Ran the hair dryer on low speed & heat - will go longer with it again.

tarafından

I just did the "hairdryer" method yesterday ... today .. I have a half bin full of ice ... no need to take anything apart .... just remove the ice bin and heat the tray for 5 or 10 minutes ... you'll feel the heat coming out the above vent ... it'll take a few hours see any results but this worked for me ....

tarafından

I’ve had the same issue with this model off & on since purchase in Oct/2018 and the unit was replaced while under warranty. Problem continues. Tried the hair dryer suggestion and it worked….I could see the ice formation at the base of the black water tube.

This is an obvious design defect and I’m going to write Whirlpool to see if there’s any response.

tarafından

Good luck with that. I have same exact issue, bought mine November 2018. Out of warranty so it's a service call with up front charge then parts and labor. I haven't tried hair dryer method yet but will be doing that to hopefully get it working again.

I have the exact Whirlpool refrigerator and am having the same problem with the ice maker. What is happening is that the water tube that feeds into the ice tray gets frozen shut. To fix it, first remove the ice cube container, next turn the ice maker switch to off, then remove the 4 screws that hold the cover on, then gently pull the cover partially off (there will be some wires that are connected, so be careful). Then blow a hair dryer on high heat into the black water tube until the ice melts (you will not see the ice chunk since it is up inside the black tube). Re assemble the ice maker and turn back on. It may take a couple of hours for the ice maker to cycle through before it starts filling the ice cube tray again. This has happened multiple times to my ice maker. I will be contacting Whirlpool about this issue.

I have the same unit and same problem, worst refrigerator I have owned. Had a Samsung and the ice maker never had a problem for 14 years running. This Whirpool from day one dropped once onto the floor randomly all day, ice in the bid forms a big frozen ball every other month and requires it to be emptied not the ice machine stopped working. Unit only 15 months old! Sad shoddy product hope they go out of business.

tarafından

i bought 4 of these for my rentals, and so far 3 have had the freezer doors replaced under warranty. now the 4th quit, and i'm 1 year past warranty. the water tube heating element is embedded in the foam in the door. so unless you cut the plastic and foam, you have to replace the door, which costs around $1000 just to buy the door. this is obviously a serious design flaw, and whirlpool has no other fix. not happy.

tarafından

I had this same issue and I appreciate the easy fix. The hair dryer worked perfectly and saved me a service call. Thank you.

tarafından

Ours just turned 2 yrs old, almost to the date and now we are having the same issue of the ice maker not working. What a shame. Shame on Whirlpool!!!!

4 screws doesn't remove a plate, the whole freezer unit is 1 piece. What cover are you referring to?

I definitely wouldn’t use a hair dryer, if it’s going to be a constant problem and a simple fix to thaw the ice in the tube get a small steamer, that won’t melt or warp the plastic. Not sure it’s worth spending $1000 to replace the door due to poor engineering when you can just thaw it every now and then. I have been repairing appliances for 12 years, the small steamer is definitely the way to go and very quick.

tarafından

I have the same problem on a 3.5 year old side by side model. Can I just take out the bin and use a steamer in the ice compartment? What steamer do you use?

tarafından

If your ice maker fill tube is icing over that is because your inlet water valve is bypassing. You need to replace the inlet water valve, defrost your fill tube, and your problem is solved.

tarafından

Thank for that added repair idea. I assume the inlet valve is in the door somewhere, since tap water is always available. Took a long time to find anything on repairing a complete WP icemaker-in-the-door. Haven't found a video yet.

tarafından

Link below for the steamer, you shouldn’t have to take anything apart to steam the fill tube.

If your fill tube is icing over that means your inlet water valve is allowing water to bypass. It can literally be a drip a month and it will freeze the tube. Replacing the valve is easy, that’s what really needs to happen. Just look up your model number.

The part number for the model refrigerator in this thread is. Part# WPW10179146

@sclendenin did you ever find out the problem? I have a brand new fridge of this model and it's not making ice and the arm is in the up position. I also don't dare move it manually as it feels like it will break.

I have not found the problem. I have tried most of the ideas in this blog with varied results. Sometimes for no apparent reason the thing starts making ice cubes and then again for no apparent reason it just stops. The randomness makes it hard to figure out and makes me crazy. Currently it is not making ice. I just took the advice to turn it down to one bar from two. We'll see what happens.

The shut off arm is currently up. However I have noted it being stuck up and it was still making cubes. Makes no sense.

I will give it a few days with the temp set to one bar and see. I'll do the hair dryer too.

tarafından

I FIXED THIS! I cut the bottom of a water bottle off about two inches and made a side port for the tube water dispenser. Taped it over the outlet and it blocked the air that was freezing the tube!

tarafından

@tewatkins do you have a picture?

tarafından

Just cover the opening with cardboard. I posted a picture at the end of this thread.

tarafından

The ice maker on mine will make ice, dump it into the receptacle, but then the ice partially melts and then refreezes into a big clump. Then water runs out into the catch tray below the dispenser. I have cleaned the coils and checked elsewhere for dust and blockage. The fridge is cold, and the freezer keeps things frozen...just not the ice. I'm about to toss this thing into the street.

I had the same issue and tried the same corrective actions with no success. I emptied the ice bin, shut the ice maker off and unplugged the refrigerator. After 10 minutes I plugged it back in and turned the ice maker and within 4 hours it was making ice again. It is working fine now. I think somehow the ice maker gets out of sequence and by unplugging it you are resetting it and is restarts the sequence.

I tried turning it off twice for 15 minutes or so, still no ice. You can hear the water line try to pass water but nothing comes out.

UPDATE!!! Hair Dryer worked! I aimed it at area where the ice is made as well as the vent/shoot where the ice comes through. It seems to have worked. They need to sell blowdryers with the product for future freeze ups...in the freezer LOL

I am having the same problem. It seems like whenever I replace the water filter it does this. It usually starts back making ice within 12 hours but now...nothing. I can't take the panel off because the lines are in side the door. My ice maker stopped working within 2 months of receiving new appliance. It is now barely 3 years. Bad product. A lot of people having issues with this. Not sure what else do to. Unplugged, removed filter (waiting for new filter to come incase somehowe line got clogged), I refuse to spend $1000 for a new door. Would rather get new appliance that has better reviews. Any other suggestions???

Worst refer kicks ice on the tile floor when it feels like it when it works. If your lucky you will find the cube cubes before they melt.. I have slipped on the we’re floor…POS

@Flagirl These all have the same issue. A bad setting on the thermostat. Turn your freezer down to 1 (one) and it will be a very rare occurrence for the ice maker to stop. Even at 1 my freezer still stays at absolute zero.

To prevent the problem from happening again set your freezer temp to 1. It will still keep everything very well frozen, but it will keep the temp warm enough to keep the ice from freezing in the filler tube. Read further down for more precise ways to take the unit out. Aslo you need to keep the hair dryer on it long enough to make sure the clog is freed.

After a year of waiting to get another door, it turned out that the problem was the icemaker had not returned to the home position after dumping a batch of ice. That was the problem. The repair man used the keypad on the door to run the recycle to get it back to the home position. I'm not sure if you could accomplish this by just physically forcing it back into position or not.

My solution was to cut the bottom of a plastic 1 liter bottle about two inches. A slot was made to allow the water to flow. This prevents the freezing air from blowing into the water dispenser and freezing. I simply taped it in place. Has not frozen useless in months.

I've had 6 of these fridges with fill lines freezing. The heating element burns out. See pic. It's wrapped around the water line. You pretty much have to destroy the door and foam to get to it. If you're careful, you can cut this out so that it doesn't show if you put icemaker cover back on. From there, if you can find the same heating element? I couldn't. I was thinking remove the foam against the outer steel skin, so that the outside temp heats up the water line. Then put new foam to cover hole. Just haven't tackled this yet.

Yeah, screw whirlpool and their garbage products...I've now taken apart and thawed the %#*@ tube 3 times this week, whic is how many times I've done it in the past year, tomorrow I'm going to lay on the floor and wrap copper line around the compressor at the bottom, then use 2 quick connects to patch it inline to the plastic water line, If hot water won't fix the issue, whirlypoolers are going to have to warranty an entire new %#*@ door on this steaming pile of junk.

UPDATED!

Circa January 2022: Our Whirlpool Model WRS555SIHZ03 refrigerator was new in August 2020, purchased at Lowe’s, with 5-year extended warranty. I’d say within a year ago, the icemaker stopped making ice the first time. I noticed that someone in the house fat-fingered the front Control Panel, causing the freezer compartment temperature to be DECREASED to the COLDEST setting!? What I did to fix this problem: 1) Set the freezer temp on the Control Panel to the WARMEST setting (one bar). 2) Cleared the frost from the Shut Off Arm. 3) Cycled the On/Off Switch, and the Storage Bin Sensor Switch. This apparently was enough, after 15-30 minutes, to thaw an apparent blockage in the Supply Line, according to other reports here. I heard the water supply begin to flow again to the ice maker. Soon the first batch of ice was dumped into the empty Storage Bin. By late, late evening, the Storage Bin had an ample supply. By the morning, the Bin was full and the Shut Off Arm was again regulating the cycling of the icemaker. I then reset the freezer temp to the “checked value” (3 bars). Victory!

March 27th, 2002: This week of March 23rd, 2022, the ice Storage Bin was empty once again! Once again, the freezer compartment temp had somehow been decreased to a value lower then the “checked value” on the Control Panel. There is no build-up of frost or icing around the Shut Off Arm this time. I am currently in the midst of shooting this recurring trouble, and will attempt: 1) Resetting the ice maker using the On/Off Switch (Off for at least 10 minutes), and 2) CAREFULLY thawing the area with a hair dryer. I don’t see a Black Supply Line anywhere, but I’ll still try it. Wish me luck!

June 18th, 2022: It's taken me several weeks to catch up to write this, but Circa April 2022, for a couple of weeks after setting the freezer to the proper temp as above, I tried resetting the icemaker power as suggested by the article on The Ice Making Hub (How To Reset Whirlpool Ice Maker), but without success. I could NOT hear the flow of water into the icemaker, and did not restore the flow of ice cubes into the Storage Bin.

I then determined to use my wife's hair dryer ON LOW HEAT SETTING to gently warm things up around the icemaker and behind the fascia covering it. With the Storage Bin removed and Power Button (rocker switch) turned off, I directed warm air upwards over the icemaker assembly itself, until no more frost or water droplets remained. I also directed warm air through the louver in the fascia into which chilled air flows over the icemaker assembly to make ice. I guess I did this for 10-15 minutes. Afterwards, I again cycled the power button. Then, I waited.

LO, AND BEHOLD, within 20 or 30 minutes, the flow of ice cubes into the Storage Bin began again. Slowly at first, but then a regular avalanche of cubes, filling the Bin within a few hours. This icemaker, when on its game, sounds like river stones being thrown against a metal barn! I started the resetting process with the freezer temp on 1 bar, and have raised it to 2 bars for several weeks. I'm shy of raising it to the checked value of 3 bars, but may do so since, at this time of year, the temperature in the house is warm enough to perhaps warrant doing so. Leaving it at 2 bars may not slow down the rate of making ice, even with a warm house, but we'll see. We use a lot of ice at our house. Again, Victory!

I'm in the same boat. Remove the ice bin, then the 4 screws and the cover/trim will wiggle loose, unplug the connector to the on/off switch, then fully remove the cover/trim. You'll see the end of the water line & trough that feed water to the tray. Problem is the freezer air duct blows directly on all this. = a bad design. I'm going to try some air re-direction or insulation to keep the strong cold air off the water area. May not work - but I'm going to try. I've done the hair dryer twice.

tarafından

I've done the change water filter, hair dryer and then unplug for 10 minutes and so far still no ice being made.

I have noticed that the ice shut off arm is all the way up which would I think shut off ice making because the bin was full and pressed up on this arm.

It does not want to be pulled back down and I don't want to pull harder and maybe break something. It seems to be part of the same box that flips the tray over when Ice is dumped into the bin.

Has anyone else had this problem with the shut off arm "stuck" in the up (off) position?

tarafından

Since yesterday, after the filter change, hair dryer and unplugging actions, the ice maker has come on twice very briefly and made about 20 ice cubes. The shut off arm remains stuck in the up(off) position.

Apparently water does flow if it makes 20 cubes.

I am considering replacing the entire ice maker unit. I found it online for about $65.00.

tarafından

@sclendenin If I am reading the other commenters' contributions correctly, the ice maker unit is not the problem. The problem is the heating element for the fill tube burning out, which allows the fill tube to freeze up, plugging up the water supply to the ice maker unit. (See 93typhoon above.)

If someone could design and manufacture a replacement heating element, or even find a good one for purchase, and then figure an effective and economical way to replace the original with it, one might be able to make a pretty fair rate of return supplying them to owners of this frig, or to repair men/repair women.

tarafından

My shut off arm is also in the up position & I don’t know how to get it back down. It had been down until I took the ice bin out to check the on/off switch. Any solutions for lowering the arm?

Try taking out the ice bucket and running a blow dryer through the chute just for a couple of moments. I know it sounds archaic, but it seems to work. Seems like the line freezes up. The icemaker still wants to try to make ice and the motor goes but nothing comes out. Good luck.

This djejtntkck fridge! I've fixed it a handful of times by removing the bucket, taking the door panel off, then using a blow dryer with that rubber thing that looks like a waterside. That would fix it but now I have done this 3 times and kept the hair dryer on it for almost 10 minutes and nothing. I will never buy an "indoor ice maker" fridge again. Any other suggestions before I blow this thing up?

I keep my setting on 1 and I rarely have to use the hair dryer. I posted this a long time ago. Even at 1 my freezer stays at absolute zero and that is still too cold and wastes electricity. Whirlpool's total problem is the thermostat on this unit needs to be recalled!

The black part is the fill tube that you can see. The green is the water line, and the foil looking thing is the heating element that is supposed to keep the water line warm. That fails, and that is why the line freezes. And everything is encased in foam, so you have to destroy the door to get to it.

Sometimes unplugging the power and waiting a minute to plug the power back in would work, but this last time nothing seemed to work. I read the posts above about the hair dryer (3 minutes on medium heat). Works perfectly. I did move the temperature setting more toward “cold”. Great posts. Thank you. Side note, I agree the steamer would be better, but hair dryer is more handy.

The REAL problem is the thermostat. Its reading is set too cold. Keep your setting on 1 and the freezer will stay at zero (o degrees) and your ice will flow fine. If the repair guy comes out and does not replace a part he will charge you a service call. If he replaces the thermostat that won't fix the problem. It is a design error on the thermostats!

Similar to what tewatkins said above, my fix was to cover the opening where the water discharges to the ice tray. Simply used cardboard and duct tape. Cut the cardboard the size of the opening above the water chute. Wrapped the water chute too, but don't know if I had to. It's worked fine for a couple weeks this way. Would not last two days before.

I Never do this but. I am turning my POS Whirlpool into a beer fridge in my shop.

After replacing water valves, Filters, buying a heat gun. I designed at least 5 air deflectors turned the temp down. Other then gutting the door or replacing it. I gave up. My new fridge not Whirlpool is on the way. Good luck to all. No more Whirlpool for me or my Extended family!!

Remove water filter and leave it out. Water and ice should still function. I had the same problem, replaced both water valves, ice maker, and reset the fridge via front panel and removed the water filter. It all works now. It has something to do with the water filter receptacle I believe.

Just had a repair guy look at ours and it turns out that the heater to keep the water line from freezing is inside the door and can’t be repaired. You have to replace the door to the tune of about $500. Call Whirlpool and file a complaint. They need to make this right.

People, people, people.... The fix is so simple....I've said it here over and over again.... The problem is the thermostat in the refrigerator. It keeps the temperature colder than it should. If you set the temp for the freezer to level 0ne (1) your problem will go away! At least for the most part. In the summer when the temp is warmer outside it may try harder to stay cold and very rarely you might have to use the hair dryer on the black filler tube for the ice tray. But once or twice a year is much better than every two weeks if you keep your temp on 3.

You don't need to take apart your door or rip out all the wiring like I have seen some fools do. There have been any number of fixes that are incredibly hard when this is really very simple.

The real problem Whirlpool refuses to even understand. I may just write their Quality Control Director and try to get him to fix it. I guarantee you the thermostat is reading too warm and it is causing the fridge to run too cold. SIMPLE FIX!!!!!!!!!!!!! Don't make it more complicated than it is!!

So here is what worked for me, after many a bought with a hairdryer to defrost the water line…only to have it freeze again. I turned the freezer to 1 and the refrigerator to 2. I know the suggested setting is 3 for both but like everyone else here, the waterline was freezing and then on top of it, my fridge side was freezing any food anywhere near the back. Luckily it’s my second fridge mainly for drinks or food would be getting ruined at a rapid pace. Changing the settings as mentioned, has solved the problem for me. But the second one of my kids pushes buttons and goes above 1 & 2, the ice maker will freeze up again and stop making ice. Not ideal at all but at least a current solution to an annoying manufacturing problem that os apparently going to just be ignored by the company.
