Hi,
Since the keyboard works with the AC adapter connected it most probably is either a bad battery connection or a broken wire leading from the battery compartment.
Just verifying that the batteries were inserted correctly.
Here’s an image that show the battery layout for the keyboard.

The batteries are connected in series configuration in the battery compartment so that their combined voltage equals 9V.
Check that the spring connectors in the battery compartment (green) are exerting enough pressure on the battery so that the +ve end (other end of the battery shown in blue) is being pushed firmly into its’ connector so as to make for a good electrical connection.
Also ensure that the connectors are clean and bright and shiny and not corroded etc. Do not use any liquids to clean the connectors surfaces as you don’t want the liquid to get into the electronics of the keyboard. Try using an eraser to clean the contact surfaces.
If still no good the keyboard would have the opened and the problem further diagnosed.
Since you say that this is not something that you can do, perhaps you may know someone who is handy at fixing electronics who could fix it for you as it shouldn’t be that difficult. Otherwise contact a reputable, professional electronics repair service and ask for a quote.
