Audio keeps cutting out randomly and comes back

My tv vizio d55-f2 audio cuts out for a short second or sometimes even ten seconds or longer. Usually it comes back. I already tried checking if the audio problem persisted on hdmi sources like the PlayStation and the red and white audio connected to a surround and also just checking the tv speakers themselves. All emit the problem so I determined the main board need replacement. Upon replacement in just 2 days the problem slowly showed up again. I finally took it to a repairman and he replaced the audio chip on the main board. Just recently got it back, he said it’s working now, and lo and behold the problem came right back. I hooked up the Nintendo switch and noticed the same audio problem was back. I don’t understand why this keeps happening and or how to fix this. Is there more parts in the board that can affect that problem? Also what are the odds that a new board had the exact problem? It’s all very strange. Can the tv just be defective to the point it can’t be fixed?

Hi @lui1222 ,

You say that you checked if the problem was on other HDMI sources, but have you checked, if possible, whether the problem is there when using either a Component or Composite video + audio signal source? Most cable boxes, dvd players etc etc offer this option as well as HDMI. This is only to check if it also has the problem or not because these inputs are an analogue signal and therefore the digital signal processor on the mainboard is not used as it is for HDMI signals.

If it works OK when using analogue inputs, has the TV got the latest firmware installed?

Check if there is a firmware update available as it might resolve the problem. Worth a try anyway.

So I did try using the audio component cable with a speakers. The red and white plugs into the back of tv right? I did not check composite , I don’t have that cable. But yea problem exists on the regular analog and hdmi and even on the tv regular speakers , without anything plugged in. Repair man said he did notice it was the audio chip that needed replacement, so he replaced it , said it worked fine now, then I use it and problem came back. He told me it’s up to date, I also checked on the tv for updates and it said it’s up to date. Im wondering how this problem exists on 2 main boards , my old one which I didn’t fix , I swapped for new one, then new one has same problem , even after fixing audio chip. What else could be the problem?

I meant that the audio "input" to the TV has to be analogue.

So with Component video you have to use the Red/Blue/Green video inputs +Red/White audio inputs or if you have Composite video then it is the Yellow video input (which can be the Green of the Component video input) + Red/White audio input.

Using this means that the digital signal processor is not used. This processor translates the input signal and separates the video and the audio and directs them to the appropriate sections in the TV. With analogue signal inputs the video is already separated from the audio.

The same audio processor is still used however after this to drive the speakers or audio output to the external speakers be they a digital or analogue connection. The internal speaker connections are analogue

It just isolates the problem a bit more, but it is still tied to the mainboard.

Whether it is a firmware problem or a component (design?) problem inherent in all the same boards, testing would have to be done to determine which, but a DIY would not have the technical resources especially if it were a software problem

Perhaps you could contact Vizio technical services and ask if they are aware of any such problems. Don't know how easy this would be, to get around their customer service department as I'm sure that they wouldn't know the answer.

So the thing is I don’t use composite cables , the tv does have the sockets for it , but it also has a stand alone audio input that is the red and white sockets. I connected a pc surround system that uses those colors . And it worked for like 2 years until the sound problem started , and then I checked all hdmi and the same problem and then just the standalone tv speakers without anything connected, same problem. I checked my tv settings everything is the same since it used to work, so it’s not a settings problem. No matter the audio source, the audio problem is there. But the strange part is that it was fine for 2 years , then problem happens, replace main board , problem happens again immediately, replaced the audio chip , problem still there.

@lui1222 ,

OK if the problem is there regardless of whether the audio output is to the TV speakers or external speakers, then as the audio chip has been replaced ans also the mainboard then the only common factor left is the power supply.

But since the power to the mainboard would be distributed on the mainboard to the various sections on the board and not as a separate audio power and video power etc feeds from the power board, then I don't know.

There is a chance that the new board is also faulty but you would need a 3rd change of board to prove it.

So the power supply can affect such a problem? I was told before it doesn’t, but now I don’t know. Ok ima see if repair guy finds another specific faulty that can be fixed. If I do need to replace the power board or another main board then I’m just gonna invest in another tv cause at that point I’m spending as much to fix it. Alright that’s all I can think now thank you for ur time.
