Partially Dim Backlight at Top Portion of Screen - Element 65" Roku TV

Element 65” Roku Smart TV E4ST6519RKU

I picked up this TV from a friend. They said the TV suddenly went dim at the top (no drops or unusual activity).

It seems like the horizontal led strip at the specific location is just not receiving as much power as the others are; when the backlight is increased/decreased, the portion of the screen increases and decreases as well, though it is relatively dimmer than the rest of the screen, so I don’t think the entire led strip is off. The difference is more noticeable at full brightness than at the lowest setting in my opinion.

It has been factory reset multiple times and nothing is plugged into any of the source ports.

I have this happening more frequently now. Reached out to Element and at first they were going to repair or replace. Then throughout our conversation found out it was bought on Black Friday. So they paid me what I paid. ALL 65" Roku TVs have 2 year warranties. Mfg Date on back. I think they knew about these crappy boards and sold them anyway... Class Action!! Tried the Home x 5, up x 1, rewind x 2 and ff x 2, master resets, Now i am going to try a new set of backlights...

I have the same issue with the TV. Just happened last weekend.

I called and talked to the customer support. Apparently, I'm a couple months out of 1 year warranty.

2.5 months, to be specific. They wouldn't help me at all. Now, I'm stuck with a TV, which should last more several years (!), that is dark on the top and bottom.

Element, you lost a loyal customer. Crappy customer service, cheaply made TV's... I should have expected this from a Black Friday special, I suppose.

--- DON'T BUY ELEMENT TV's (or electronics for that matter) ----

This happened to me. My screen started fading to black. I called Element Customer Support and the first rep was not really helpful. It keep nagging at me so I called back. The next rep said they are aware of the issue and he kept apologizing. He confirmed there is a 2 year warranty on the 65" Roku TV. I totally agree that they knew these TV's were no good which is probably why they were so cheap on Black Friday. This was my first time buying a flat screen and the TV is not even 2 yrs old. I should have kept my old TV's with the back. I was not having any issues with them. #PeerPressure

This is very likely the same problem I had which are bad LED strips. I’m not sure what went wrong with them but to service any of them, you’re near guaranteed to bend the strips so replacement is the only way. No soldering LEDs unless you want to drive yourself crazy.

I had one or two strips kind of light up when I disassembled. Didn’t realize it was actually dim too until I swapped.

July 2023 Update

I finally lost all my LEDs following my last update. I thought "what the heck, I'll try bridging the connections" as mentioned below by @ronchinnery. IT WORKS

One strip didn't come back but just by bridging the middle connectors, I brought back 5/6 of the LED strips I had replaced so it's worth a shot if you don't mind getting back in there. Soldering takes some skill because the board does a great job of dissipating heat and the solder cools super fast.

Weird but, somehow my image quality improved this time around: my red pixels had a significant lag and would be terribly noticeable on something like the Netflix logo. For some reason it's gone so it actually looks better than I've ever seen.

The free TV continues to give!

13 Month Update

I see a strip has gone out on my TV already. If you see this, you're on your way to bridging the strips following advice below.

Just replaced them all and the end result was exciting.

It’s not a repair for the faint of heart.

TIPS FOR REPAIR

These two videos helped.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hSz--aRc...

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KaKi5aC9...

If I recall, there are different pieces blocking the buffer board/scan drive covers. Just make sure everything is out of the way: speakers, tv stand brackets, etc. I folded and taped the buffer boards to the front of the screen like in the Vizio video. They are fragile. I removed the reflector sheet rather than cut. It's just double sided tape but I would just cut if I did this again. There are so many tiny parts and having an intact reflector/potentially ruining it is not worth it. Wires delivering power are underneath the sheet so watch for those if you cut (look at my earlier pic). Replacement strips come with new double sided tape preinstalled and connect together rather than having a wire in between. Old strips will bend and be useless afterwards. They are really stuck.

Tips:

  • I used suction cups from Home Depot to lift the screen. They are super strong so I only squeezed them hard enough to lift the screen but enough that you won’t drop it. It’s scary. I lifted the screen more times than I needed because I kept goofing up and rushing. Ideally you lift it out, set aside, do your repair, and place it back in… once.
  • The screen is glass. Have lots of room to move things around and clean places to set things down. Like 4 times the size of the screen because you’ll need somewhere to work, somewhere to set the filters down, the lcd, and the reflector sheet if you took it out. I chipped the corner of the lcd using the metal frame to guide it in place and learned quickly to be gentle. That was the hardest part since the adhesive is still sticky and held when I laid it in incorrectly SO many times.
  • When going around the edge of the screen, it is adhered with black foam tape. (1:40 in the TCL video) I used a thin plastic card. Mine balled up while cutting and I didn't clean up when assembling so I can see little black lumps on one edge part of the screen.
  • GET HELP TO GUIDE IT IN AND OUT. The adhesive will stick in places when you go to lift it the first time so have someone around to use your plastic card to find those stuck spots. It will also want to stick when you place it. Try to place it correctly the first time.

Best of luck! My TV was free so this was worth it. Assess your risk but I’m glad some people are keeping these cheap monsters out of the junk pile!

Where’d you get the strips from? I’ve got her cracked wide open.

Did you ever figure it out?

Carson Dang  check the voltages on your power supply going to the backlights. A bad power supply can give your backlight those symptoms. Usually, if an LED has failed, it is either the whole strip that is dark or just the spot where the failed LED is located. Any off that would look different then what your image is showing.

Thanks for the answer! I haven't gotten to checking the voltages yet. The top part of the screen is no longer dim, but now there is a slightly dim part just above the bottom of the screen. How should I go about checking the voltages specifically?

tarafından

I’m having the same issue but now the whole screen is dim. Did you ever figure out what was the issue ?

tarafından

We bought two of these tv’s. Both of them the whole screen went dim. Not sure what to do

tarafından

@joefissh dim as in you can still see it when you shine a flashlight at an angle against the screen? If so, it's a backlight issue either related to a bad power board or a bad backlight array. Give us more info about what is going on with your TV's

tarafından

Just replaced the power supply still the same thing

This is one of the most mis-diagnosed LED problems on this specific TV.

Quite often it's the connections BETWEEN the two LED strips per row. With all of the thermal cycling, and the LED strips stretching and shrinking due to the thermal cycles, those cheap little connectors get worn out and oxidized. I fixed every dead LED strip on mine for FREE with this method.

Some people try to clean the connectors so they work, but that's a big mistake - because they are already damaged. The best fix is to bypass the connectors by soldering 22-24awg solid wires in place of those connectors... without taking the LED strips out.

No, this is not a simple fix... it requires nearly as much disassembly as replacing the LED strips, but it is permanent. BTW, brand new LED strips will likely do the same thing. It's best to get a TV LED Backlight tester on Amazon... under $20, then you can know for sure if they are bad or not.

@joefissh and @oldturkey03 did either of you ever figure out what the proper voltage out of the power supply should be, mine is 45v and none of the led strips are lit, I'm trying to decide if I need LEDs or a power supply.

James Johnson same Model/Size TV? The voltage of 45V is not sufficient to drive the backlight. With a panel that size I would expect it to be around 140 VDC to 180VDC and higher (potentially 300-400VDC)

tarafından

Yep, same make and model. I didn't think that would be enough. I'm going to see if I can find a power supply board. Thanks @oldturkey03

tarafından

James Johnson best of luck with your TV and let us know how it works out.

tarafından

The LED voltage is 32 to 38 volts on this Element 65". When everything is working right, it's about 34 volts.
