My macbook pro screen has started started glitching all of a sudden and I am unsure why. I have tried the following :

  • Restarting
  • Resetting SMC

Your T-CON board has failed likely from over heating. Either you tend to use your system on your bed or rug which blocks the vents or you run your system hard playing heavy graphics games or video editing.

Hi Dan,

I just started having the same issue, so thank you very much for the answer. I have almost no doubt I’ve overheated the TCON board. I have some follow-up questions, whenever you can:

  1. Do you have some idea how much Apple would charge to make this replacement out-of-warranty?
  2. Are the 2020 Macbook Pros (13-inch, Intel i5 processor) set up the same way internally, i.e. with the TCON board between the heat sinks? And are they any better at not overheating? I guess another way to phrase this question is, are the newer Macbook Pros any better at avoiding this issue?
  3. I will definitely look to install a temperature monitor in the future...what is a safe range to have the temperature to avoid running into this issue again?

Totally understand if you're not in the place to answer some of these questions. Any help would be greatly appreciated!

One more quick question: is this issue one that tends to build up over time or can happen in one instance of misuse?

I'm just trying to self-diagnose what processes may have led to this happening.
