2008 24” iMac GPU Upgrade

I have a 2008 24” iMac with a faulty Nvidia 8800GS GPU. I’ve fixed it twice by heating the GPU but I’d like to replace it since that’s not a reliable fix. I’d like to upgrade the GPU but the one it has is the best one the computer came with. I know that other iMac GPUs can be upgraded to ones from gaming laptops but I’ve never seen anyone do a 2008 iMac. Does anyone know of any other GPUs compatible with this iMac other than the 2 it shipped with? I’d prefer at least 2GB of vram but 1GB is still better than the 512MB faulty card I have right now. I know how to flash the vbios so that’s not an issue. Thanks!

Replacing the GPU MXM board is getting tough these days as all you can find are used boards which just could be re-heated to make them work like your own board was.

As to what to put in, Apple has custom firmware on the boards it used. While some folks have re-flashed the EEROM others forgo doing it but at a cost! You loose your boot menu, the systems display drivers (in Apples logic board EFI) aren’t used so you loose the display until the drive drivers are loaded so the screen stays black and lastly you loose the brightness control.

So… Unless you have the tools and skills to flash the GPU I would stick with the Apple parts.

Then we get into why your GPU dies! Are you a car racing fan? Ever watch the Indy500 todays races are not as exciting as they where back in the 60’s and 70’s! Back then the drivers pushed their cars to the limit often blowing an engine. So to win the race was knowing when their vehicle will fail and not push it to that point. Todays cars very rarely fail in mid race! They push the vehicle to the limits of the road not worrying about pushing the vehicle as the engines are so much better today!

So what does this have to do with your iMac? Its the same thing! At the time your iMac was designed back in 2005/2006 apps where very simple in todays standards! Doom was a knockout hit when it was introduced in 1995 on the Mac, but it was still using basic ASCI graphics, followup versions got into full graphics fidelity on what the GPU’s could offer at around 2004 time frame, even then we started to see GPU failures! As peoples skills improved the GPU’s had to work harder.

Todays games are leap years more powerful than Doom was back in the day! It doesn’t take much to kill the MXM GPU boards even the best ones Apple contracted within the 2011 models just give up!

The 2011 iMac AMD Radeon HD 6770M or Radeon HD 6970M GPU’s and these boards need much more cooling and power to work than what your system can offer.

I have a 2011 27” and I’m on my sixth GPU board! And I wasn’t even playing games just doing photo editing! I don’t use it any more for photo editing as I just don’t want to get another GPU for it.
