MacBook no post, fan rev, and suddenly now it working. Possible cause?

Hi everyone,

I recently changed thermal paste on my MacBook.

It ran for like 10 minutes, then it turned off. I don’t know if I mess something up. After that the system not able to turn on anymore and fan rev.

I then unplugged the battery and tried to turn it on with charger. The system did not turn on but beep three times so I used heat gun to heat the RAM up. Then the system will only post, and fan rev. After give it up for three days, it suddenly turn on like nothing ever happen. I stressed test my macbook and it passed everything.

The only thing that I suspect is battery because my system would occasionally turn itself off. Could battery caused it? Or what can caused this to happen?

Update: After replacing the heat sink

For anyone interested. After changing a new heat sink and applied new thermal paste, the MacBook runs cooler and the temperature on the right and left heatsink proximity changes in response with CPU temperature.

Although it never went past 55 degrees Celsius but it temperature went down as CPU cooled down. This is in direct contrast with the old heat sink where it stays at 45 degree approximate all the time.

Did you over do the paste? You don't want the TIM to over flow the silicon chip onto the carrier and get onto the small SMT devices on it.

For the battery, let’s get a better view of things, install this gem of an app! CoconutBattery take a snapshot of the apps main window and post it here for us to see Adding images to an existing question

Thanks for reply. I don't think I overdo the paste. I actually running out of paste while I doing it so I do it very conservatively. I'm not sure what you mean by TIM or SMT?. Do you mean those resistors near the cpu? If yes, I only put the paste surround the cpu and gpu die. The reason I suspect the battery is because this symptom happened before and I have to changed the logicboard. This happens due to cpu chip die according to the logic board repair shop. So I buy another board on Ebay and replace it. I'm not sure if the battery voltage could lead to those issues?

Oh I understand it now. I don’t think the paste get into SMT devices. I will attempt to redo the paste once the new paste arrive. The macbook runs fine right now but I do see that it is getting hotter and fan rev up way quicker

How about installing a good thermal monitoring app like TG Pro to you can gain a better view of things. Post a snapshot of the sensors when the temp is running hard. Do make sure to size the window so all of the sensors are seen Adding images to an existing question.

The heat sink its self has lost its coolant!

Note the CPU is 90 and above, yet the Air Flow proximity & Left/Right Heat Sink Proximity temps are in the 40’s to 50’s so much cooler! Thats a sign the heat is not getting to the fins and the fans are both flat out!

Time to replace it!

The reason your system shuts down is SMC will do that when the its clear there is a risk the system will be damaged from heat.

That is a very insightful answer Dan! That would explain why the old board cpu die due to running excessive heat a long period of time. I'll order a new heatsink and update the results. Although if you don't mind, can you explain how the heatsink loses its coolants? I always thought heatsink just a piece of copper.

All of the Macbook Pro's use a fluid filled heat transfer tube.

Basically, the liquid is the means of heat transference to the fin area to then be exhausted by the fans
