Probably charging port/chip, Multiple issues

Quick description of problem and then problem trail after.

The device works plugged in and on battery alone but does not show any battery percentage and permanently show an empty battery icon. When turned on it periodically resets every 3 mins 30 s and just keeps looping like this. Tried resetting the phone, setting to factory defaults and it doesn’t do anything to alleviate this. Brief search shows that its most likely the controller for charging associated with the charging port.

I’d appreciate any suggestions before i venture into a home repair.

Longer story:

My mother bought an iphone 8 from an ebay seller with a 1 year warranty. phone arrive is in good condition and works fine until she drops it and cracks the screen. she takes it to an apple certified business for a screen repair and then when she gets it back the screen is fixed but the battery and reset problem starts. She tries to sort this out with the company and they basically say its not their fault, she then takes it to the apple store near by and they tell her that there are “problems” with it and they wont even look at it now I’m getting this second hand but things like “the glass sticks out to far” the “charging port isn’t right” and “it must be from china” are thrown around. She contacts the seller who had in the ebay listing offered a 1 year warranty but they wont reply to her. Ebay wont do anything because shes had it for a tiny bit over 6 months and paypal wont do anything either they both say she has to contact the seller. So she gave me the phone to see if i can do anything and is using her old Samsung in the mean time.

This has nothing to do with software; it has been caused by technician damage. The person that replaced the screen has nudged or knocked of one or more components around the battery connector. There are two mosfets, two diodes and one resistor, if any have been nudged it will cause the problem you are having.

If you have a magnifying glass you can confirm this. Check the ones with red on them.

Going to explore doing this today don't have any nice iFixit pry tools but I've got some thin plastic parts around should do the trick and I'll get a hairdrier on it to make it easier

tarafından

Popped it open without any trouble just wanted to check i was in the right spot as there's a few parts seem to be covered and i didn't want to damage them myself poking around I'm assuming I've got the right spot and the two mosfets in your diagram I've marked on the capture i took

Oh! This is the connector near to the battery connector. To the right of it per your diagram seems like when they have plugged things back in they got some of the sticky tape around the sockets into it

Powers up again and I've got out of the boot loop but does't at the moment work on battery alone may need some charging time first but is there the possibility the battery has been shorted and is dead?

This is a tough one, but we will get it done… The OS most likely has an issue… The way to fix this would be downloading an IPA if you need instructions either reply

@spaklebak i mispoke, its called an IPSW not an IPA (Thats how you can install apps by sideloading lol)

tarafından

Great I'm pretty good at basic electronics and computing tasks but would rank myself as competent beginner. So would be happy if you could point me in the right direction. I did a quick google of IPA and I got that its an app file for ios. would i have issues with installing this as I'm stuck on about 3 mins of usable time with ios in an operable state on the phone between resets.

EDIT noticed the reply to suggest IPSW

tarafından

@spaklebak

1. Download an IPSW from here- https://ipsw.me/download/iPhone10,4/17H3...

2. go to itunes on an apple computer or windows computer with itunes installed.

3. put the phone in dfu mode (How to get into DFU mode on iPhone 8. Step 1: Connect your iPhone to your Mac or PC with a Lightning to USB cable. Step 2: Press and release the Volume Up button, press and release the Volume Down button, and press and hold the Side button for 10 seconds until the screen turns black.)

4. Hold down shift (Option for mac) while clicking restore, click on the ipsw file click ok if prompted and etc

5. Great news! your device is repairing itself (hopefully)

6. the phone must be on to be put in DFU mode

tarafından

So DFU mode

Followed the instructions, got it into DFU mode held shift clicked restore selected the ipsw and . . .

I tunes told me “an error occured” and now the phones stuck in a reset loop of maybe 6 seconds.

:P

so I’ve got a new problem i need help with

EDIT; Ive also just noticed its not working without being plugged in now so maybe the battery hasnt been charging at all and has given up.

After re-seating the connectors and managing to get it out of the boot loop and into recovery mode I'm in the process of repairing the operating system should i try to go about it as in your first suggestion?
