Won't sleep when lid is closed

Macbook doesn’t sleep when lid closed. Tried reseting PVRAM and SMC and reinstalling OS. Replaced the screen assembly about a month ago. Replaced the battery a few weeks ago. Everything worked, it seemed, after both repairs. No water damage.

Update (10/12/2020)

No apps in activity monitor are preventing sleep.

Can you give us some background on what repairs (if any) or if you've gotten your system wet.

Dan,

Replaced the screen assembly about a month ago. Replaced the battery a few weeks ago. Everything worked, it seemed, after both repairs. No water damage. I should have included that in the original description! Sorry!

Are you certain the display assembly is aligned correctly? It's uncommon, but I've a few cases on other laptops where the display assembly was misaligned and not making proper contact when shut, so it didn't go to sleep.

@zpl The display assembly appears to be aligned correctly. It opens and closes lining up perfectly and flush. How would I know that it wasn't aligned if it appears to close properly? Thank you so much in advance.

  1. Have you tried going to system preferences to check your energy saver settings? (the lightbulb icon). Make sure it’s not set to never sleep.

Go to Apple menu  > System Preferences, then click Energy Saver. Make sure Never Sleep is not selected.

  1. Go to the Activity Monitor app

and see what apps, if any need your Mac to be awake. If ”Yes” appears in the Preventing Sleep column for an app, your MacBook won't automatically sleep while an app is running. Apps can also prevent sleep when doing certain tasks like downloading files.

Thank you for replying, Eddie. I didn't have any apps that were preventing sleep. Nor did computer have anything preventing sleep in the system energy settings.

Use a steel paperclip slide it along the screens bezel area on the left and right to locate the magnet in the display. Now fold down the display close enough so you can transfer its location on the uppercase (don’t go to far! You can damage things if you close it fully)

Now use a rare earth magnet placing it at the location you noted with the paperclip on the uppercase. Underneath the uppercase shell is a Hall sensor which senses the magnetic flux of the magnet in the lid (or rare earth magnet you are using here) as you slide it across the uppercase passing over the location the display should go off (and then into sleep) If it fails to go off then either the locate is wrong magnet in the lid not properly installed) or the sensor has failed.

@danj, I'm having a problems (no doubt my error) understanding this because there are two places on the bezel of the screen that will hold the paperclip and two places on the edge beneath the keyboard that attract the magnet and the computer doesn't go to sleep. Now, on my 2017 MacBook Pro the same two places attract the clip and the magnet doesn't cause sleep in the places on the corresponding place of the hand rest. Thank you in advance for offering your suggestion on this. It's a maddening problem.

@revfrthumos - Focus on the Left & Right Sides.

The top edge magnets are to hold the lid shut and won't have any bearing on the Hall switch. I just don't know which side Apple setup on your series.
