Screen goes black and shows panic kernel screen MacBook 15 mid 2010

Hi Everybody,

I have a problem with my Mid 2010 15” Macbook Pro.

The screen goes black and shows the kernel panic screen

  • Sometimes immediately,
  • Sometimes after a few minutes while using by system eg chrome

I have noticed it does not do this

  • While downloading and installing update of High Sierra
  • In recovery mode
  • Safe Mode
  • Home screen being idle

What have I done

  1. Resetting SMC and NVRAM
  2. Installed a new SSD and I updated High Sierra
  3. Disk Utility → first aid

This is as far as I can tell the only problem

Does anyone have suggestions where I can look for a solution.

Thanks in advance!

Hans

There’s a capacitor that goes bad on this model that any idiot with a $20 hot air station and tweezers can change. That causes freezes so get it changed

Thanks Macbook medic!!

In the meantime I also came across this solution on You Tube.

But if any idiot can do this...?

I need to solder it, right?

So that's what I will do.

You maybe facing a runout of RAM either physical or virtual via your drive.

This series is limited to 8 GB of RAM so if you have only 4 GB then you’ll want to max it out.

The need issue is virtual RAM which leverages the drive. So you can encounter issues is the drive is overly full and if it have a corruption that can cause a panic call.

I would recommend replacing your original HDD to a SSD. But you need to be careful! Your system only offers a SATA II (3.0 Gb/s) interface as such the drive you put in must be able to run at this slower I/O. Most drives today are fixed speed running at SATA III (6.0 Gb/s). You’ll need to either get a SATA II SSD or one that auto senses the systems I/O speed and matches it. As an example OWC still offers a fixed SATA II (3.0 Gb/s) SSD OWC 1.0TB Mercury Electra 3G or using this auto sense drive from Samsung Samsung 860 EVO SSD. Ing you use anything else take note of what the spec sheet lists if it doesn’t list SATA II (3.0 Gb/s) find a different drive!

Hi Dan,

Thanks for your reply.

I have 8 GB of RAM and installed the Samsung 860 EVO SSD.

So that's not the problem.

What could it be?

tarafından

I would need to see a crash report to dig any deeper.

You are also using Chrome! Which is a memory hog when you open up multiple tabs, even with 8 GB and a SSD you can run into I/O limits.

How big is your SSD and how full is it?

tarafından

It's 250 GB and just installed so empty.

Thanks for your help Dan. I also kept searching and found a possible solution (see above)

@Hans-Wouter van Dam - MacBook Medic stole my next part of the answer ;-}

Yes, The capacitor is a common issue. If you've never soldered SMT devices then I would let someone with better skills do it.

@MacBook Medic - Good answer!
