I have turned on my gameboy color after a couple years in storage. It works just fine but I cannot start a game and Im not sure if the all the buttons dont work or just the start button.

I have had this problem to but i can definitely say after I inherited my dad's gameboy color most buttons do work except start and select. I have actually found the cause might be because of something building up inside the gameboy ( i found this in an article on this website will post link )
