How does the 3DS Pedometer work?

In debating with someone I have come to ask how does the 3DS measure steps? is the pedometer based of the accelerometer or is there an actual pedometer device built into the 3DS?

Pedometers (typically) work 1 of 2 ways:

piezo-electric accelerometers

Mechanical Pendulum System

Being that the 3DS has accelerometers in it already, my guess would be that that is how the pedometer works.

The 3DS seems using the mechanical. You can hear the clicking sound if you shake it.

That is the stylus and Circle Pad moving around.

its not the stylus and circlepad moving around. try it yourself. (remove the stylus, hold the circlepad)

It is also the buttons moving around. Also, there would be no room for a mechanical pedometer. If you look at the teardown you will see that there is mechanical no mechanical connections in the device.

The problem with the pedometer being a rail type is it'd not in the photos I'm pretty sure it's not a rail pedometer. There seems to be other pieces behind the circle pad that work in conjunction with the circle pad its self. It would make more sense that they would use the accelerometer instead spending more money and space on a rail type or ball type pedometer.
