iMac 2019 pci express is not present

Hello I want to upgrade my 21.5-inch Imac from 2019, by replacing the 1TB HDD with a PCI Express Type SSD. I read on some website that if my imac was not equipped with a fusion drive at the time of purchase, the pci express port would not be present? Thank you for your return cordially

Sadly, your system only has the SATA interface. The PCIe connector is not present in your system. Only Fusion Drive’d systems or ones which had a SSD only installed.

From EveryMac:

It has a Serial ATA (6 Gb/s) connector for a 2.5" hard drive. If configured with a "Fusion" Drive or an SSD at the initial time of system purchase, it also has a PCIe connector, but this connector is not present if the system only was configured with a hard drive.

You can still install a SSD (2.5” SATA) replacing your HDD.

thank you for your feedback.

On the other hand, do you think it would be interesting to use an external usb c box with an nvme ssd to install mac os?

will I gain in performance?

 thank you for everything

This is tricky! USB-C is not Thunderbolt! To give you a better reference lets look as the limits of each:

● Thunderbolt3 upto 40 Gb/s

● USB 3.1 Generation 2 upto 10 Gb/s

● SATA III upto 6.0 Gb/s

While these are the limits of the I/O channels it doesn't get into what the given drives ability as well as if you have translation logic involved to convert the given drives I/O to a different I/O. So as an example PCIe /NVMe is not a transportable protocol it needs to be converted to one.

so if you want to have the fastest storage solution you would need Thunderbolt3 and you would want a RAID box so the full bandwidth could be used as an example OWC Express 4M2 loaded with the fastest SSD available Samsung 970 EVO PCIe x4 NVMe 1.3 SSD

You then can get 3,000/2,800MB/s of performance via Thunderbolt 3!

I've setup a few for video and music pro's who wanted a deeper storage with their 27" system's. I doubt you need this level of performance with your 21.5" system. Maybe a Samsung T7 USB-C drive is all you need Samsung T7 Getting 1,050/1,000 MB/s

Thank you for your help So if I understood correctly I can take a usb c 3.1 box and h letter a ssd which will be sufficient to install mac os?

what do you think of the material choice?

Boîtier ssd

FIDECO M.2 NVME SSD Boîtier – PCIe USB 3.1, Gen 2, 10 Gbit/s, adaptateur de disque dur USB C et caddy pour M-Key ou M+B Key NVME SSD 2230/2242/2260/2280 (support UASP, installation sans outils) https://www.amazon.fr/dp/B07ZCVGK3N/ref=...

if not another solution that I could see replacing the ssd by an ssd but I saw that it was necessary to put a temperature sensor?

but who asks has dismantled the mac risk of cracking the screen !!!

Thank you for your help

@goran1410 I would go with the Samsung T7 as it offers better performance! These carriers tend to be only two lane not four as they need to be compatible with so many SSD's

As far as needing a thermal sensor thats not needed in this series if you replace your HDD with a SSD.
