MacBook Pro - Sound Output Quit - Requesting Expertise

Hello,

One day as I was busy on the computer I heard a faint pop and 'thought' I noticed a slight odor. I usually have my sound muted so didn't notice it audibly. Sometime shortly I found the 'sound out' no longer worked. Grrr, I rarely use it but, sometimes I need it.

USB sound out works, Bluetooth sound out works. I've done a fair amount of Googling and have trashed a couple pref files, played with the mini RCA jack, and a couple other efforts of 'magic wand' waving.

When a sound should play (sound effect, changed volume, etc) there is a minor, barely noticeable click/pop sound somewhere near the U, I, 8, F8 keys. Another attempt to produce that click/pop will not work till a few minutes later - then the noise can be reproduced.

The slight odor (I think) I originally noticed leads me to beleive I have a hardware issue. I'm wondering if anyone here has enough experience 'under the hood' who could give me their 2¢ on what may be the case here and maybe the difficulty level of repair?

Hardware Overview:

Model Name: MacBook Pro

Model Identifier: MacBookPro3,1

Processor Name: Intel Core 2 Duo

Processor Speed: 2.4 GHz

Number of Processors: 1

Total Number of Cores: 2

L2 Cache: 4 MB

Memory: 4 GB

Bus Speed: 800 MHz

Thank you.

Bumping this for a second pass - hoping someone has experience to share.

ABCellars,

Thank you. You have given me exactly what I was looking for. This is not something I can't live without, but recently decided to pursue what the possibilities are .... and thats where you came in. The toughest part is that it's my primary computer so disemboweling it will take some thought. Odds are eventually I will.

When and if I do, would I resurrect this thread or just start a fresh thread?

Unfortunately there is no snake oil or direct answer to this problem. You are going to need to remove the left in/out board and logic board from the laptop. You can find guides for doing those things here. You are then going to need to take a loupe or stereo microscope and look for obvious burnt parts and/or discolorations (darker areas) on the boards. That will tell you what part(s) have failed. You will then need to take pictures of those things you found to here and/or other forums for someone to determine what the part(s) is/are and the specifications/values.

The alternatives are: A number of places on eBay and the web will fix the problem for $250 USD or less. Use the available resources for sound you have.
