My optical zoom won't zoom.

About a year ago I powered up my camera, when I tried to zoom/wide the camera just powered off. Otherwise, everything else works fine.

Look, I haven't dropped or abused this camera, and I like it. When I checked w/ Kodak about repair, well- I might as well buy a new camera. I also need to save a little face with my wife for buying a refurbed camera.

I've searched the net for a teardown or another ifixit.com site for cameras w/ no luck.

Any suggestions would be appreciated

jswortz,

For a simple point-and-shoot camera your best bet might be to buy a new one. But, I think there's a slight possibility you can fix it.

My kodak had a hard time starting and the zoom lens struggled to come out. Then an error would show and the camera would turn off. I opened it up taking out the few visible screws and found dirt and sand in the mechanism. The camera works great again. Warning: Watch out for the dedicated flash capacitor and exposed contacts if you open the camera. I closed the circuit a few times with my fingers and got a little zap.

The point here is to make devices last longer/forever, and avoid throwing out old ones, and purchasing new ones.

My son's camera was splashed with a sticky liquid and the lens wouldn't zoom. I used q-tips and rubbing alcohol to work the sticky liquid out. The alcohol evaporates whereas water doesn't evaporates very quickly. It took quite a while, but I eventually got it all working again. Another reason for the shut down maybe that the battery is bad. My Kodak EasyShare camera won't zoom if the battery doesn't have enough charge.

zoom goes all the way out when turned on. When you try to zoom out it shuts the camera down........... No problem with zoom/lens going out

Although this is way later, I will add this response for others who may encounter this problem. My Kodak Easyshare camera also would not zoom, as it would shutdown when I tried to zoom. This occurred when the rechargeable batteries were completely charged, but I discovered that when I plugged the camera into a USB port, the camera zoom worked fine. I replaced the batteries with new non-rechargable AA batteries, the camera zoom again worked fine. In my case, the rechargeable batteries were at the end of their life and just did not have enough current to make the zoom function work, so the camera needs batteries which have sufficient charge, and rechargeable batteries must be adequately charged and they cannot be too old batteries for the zoom to work OK.

What is interesting is that if the rechargeable batteries are old but fully charged, most of the camera functions as normal, but the zoom will not work.
