sos acer - can't break start up cyc l e

Laptop won't proceed past initial start up checks. The following 2 msgs keep repeating :

  1. Attempting to recover installation.
  2. Undoing changes made to your computer.
  3. I have tried to break cycle by series of turning on and off in quick sucession. I read that a possible solution would be to try to start up in Safe Mode but I can't even get to this stage. Every time I turn on three same occurs.

I would like to know why this happens and more importantly, is there dinnertime I can do?

Hopefully you can view the video.

Sequence of events-

Press start / Acer appears / WINDOWS symbol appears / loader sequence (lil dots moving in circular direction) appear  / msg 1 -as outlined above  appears / msg 2 - as outlined above appears / screen goes black / starts all over again.

Sound wise - from moment I press start i hear a humming like grind which stops at point where screen goes black . It starts up as the new cycle does.

Hope this helps.  Appreciate your time.

No can't see the video but that is fine. Your description is perfect. Thanks.

The important thing is that you get the Windows logo and that is the point where you should pull the battery out BEFORE the messages appear.

You will need to do this 2 or 3 times before the Repair/Diagnostic screen loads.

(I edited the answer to reflect this)

Now the humming like grind sound is another matter - could be the fan or possibly the hard drive. Is it an HDD or an SSD?

But first let’s get the Repair/Diagnostic screen loading first.

Then we can explorer the other matters.

Troubleshooting always takes time and requires calm, patience and a methodical manner.

I tried as you advised. I removed the battery, I did this on 2 separate occasions, 5 times each. Unfortunately this made no difference.

Windows never got to the point of doing that diagnostic.

@CM Brain So it sounds, with that sound you mentioned, like the hard drive is corrupted and will need to be reformatted. If that doesn't work then replace with a SSD (solid state drive).

Or bootup off of a USB flash drive with the Windows 10 installation files on it and see if you can get into the Repair mode from that. If you can boot the USB then the computer is probably basically good.

Did “2. Undoing changes made to your computer“ never finish?

How to Enter Safe Mode when you can’t boot normally.

Safe Mode loads with a minimum set of drivers, software and service. Usually, when Windows doesn’t start normally, Safe Mode starts with no problem. It’s useful for you to troubleshoot the problem there.

''''1) Ensure your PC is off.

2) Press the power button to turn on your PC, and then hold the power button down until PC shuts down automatically (about 5 seconds). Repeat this more than 2 times until you see the Preparing Automatic Repair (see below screenshot).

Note: ''The aim of this step is to bring up the “Preparing Automatic Repair” screen. When Windows doesn’t boot properly, this screen pops up and it attempts to fix the problem.  If you’ve seen this screen the first time you powered up, skip this step.''

  • *In your case it may be physically awkward but neverthe less yes take out the battery as soon as Windows logo appears before the messages come up . You will need to do this at least 2 or 3 times until the diagnostic/repair screen loads.

3) Then wait for Windows to diagnose your PC.

4) Click Advanced options, and then the system will bring up the Windows RE (Recovery environment.) screen.

5) On the Windows RE (Recovery environment) screen, click Troubleshoot.

6)  On the Troubleshoot screen, click Advanced options.

7) Click Start-up Settings to continue.

8) Click Restart. The computer restarts and another screen opens showing a list of different start-up options.

9) On your keyboard, press the 4 number key to enter Safe Mode without network. (If you need to do some online research after boot into the safe mode, press the 5 number key to enter Safe Mode with network access.)

It a start. Let us know how it goes.

I Can't answer your question -- Undoing changes made to your computer“ .

Originally , under normal circumstances, I would leave the laptop to update and turn off when I went to bed. Whether the original cycle ever did update is anyone guess.

These 2 msgs just keep rotating over & over.

I have previously tried pressing the Start button ,as you outlined. It never worked. I tried this on at least 6 separate occasions. Not able to get to the “Preparing Automatic Repair” stage, can't proceed past those two msgs I outlined. This is the frustrating thing.

I had wondered what would happen if I took battery out.

@CM Brain

First of all you haven't described the exact sequence of what appears on your computer screen - remember you are our eyes so you need to describe everything you see, or hear, in sequence, I mean if you want help.

It may be physically awkward but yes take out the battery as soon as Windows logo appears.
