Intermitten spark, turns on and runs, other times, no sparks

The Jeep was running fine then one day as I was driving down the street, it turned off while I was driving. I pulled over and it wouldn't start. After a while it started. I took off and got home. Through the days, the same problem would arise, going down the Hwy. 60 miles an hour it would just turn off! Sometimes, it would start a few minutes later, sometimes 20, 30 minutes later but it would eventually always start.

So one time as I was getting home it happened again and I was able coast in to my drive way. I had a friend come and crank the motor while I was checking the coil to distributor wire and there was no spark. So, it was an electrical problem. I changed the distributor cap, rotor, pickup coil and Crank shaft sensor. For a couple of days, it work with no problem, so I thought I had it fixed. Then, it happened again. Back to square one.

The fuel pump turns on for a few seconds like it should when I turn on the key, every single time I turn on the key. I checked the schrader valve on the fuel injectors and it gave pressured gas out of it. So, I believe that it's not gas related.

So this is where I'm at. Anyone else has had this kind of problem? Any suggestions would be really appreciated.

Thank you very much---Victor

Thank you very much for your answers and I will follow up on the possible problems.

One thing I completely forgot to include is that for a while my gas gauge goes crazy sometimes, now, this was happening before my current problem, just to let you know. I might have 1/2 a tank of gas but when I turn it on sometimes it shows that Its close to empty yet when I turn it off and turn it on again, it will revert to the correct position. It happens often. Though it shows that its empty, I know that it has 1/2 a tank and it runs, so I still believe that its not a fuel problem.

Could that be a PCM problem or a sending unit problem?

Thank you very much ---Victor

It sounds like a sending unit problem, its also a lot cheaper to start there. It should not be directly related to it, unless you are having a short circuit in the fuel delivery unit, which could cut out your fuel supply....

Hi

check the cables from the distributor cap to the spark plugs. After a couple of years the isolation and or the resistance of the cable is gone and you can see litte sparks coming from the cable and jump over. This could be seen very often, when the weather is humid.

there are some issues with the actual connector that plugs into the coil, and the harness connectors at the ECM, the one on the right connects the coil's negative pulse line. The crank position sensor wires and O2 sensor wires sometimes get worn if they are not properly routed and can shorten out. Make sure that all your connectors are clean, tight and that you use new dielectric grease. This of course only holds true if your crankshaft sensor is new and properly connected, because that would be my first guess. The only other issue that I can think off is that there were some distributor problems and I do believe that Jeep had a recall on those. You might want to check with your Jeep mechanic. Also, may be you can get it on an analyzer and see if it gives you a code that would narrow it down a bit. There is more info on here Hope this helps, good luck.

I have a friend that is having the very same problem, or experiencing the same things - he has called me several times really !%#%%^ to say the least. We have connecting an ODBii reader and read codes P108, P201, P203, P300, P301, P305, P306, P320, P351 and P0420. Codes that's indicate Misfire on cylinders 1, 5, and 6 along with high voltage on MAP sensor and open circuit or bad coil, and O2 sensor.

Seeing that you have tried swapping out some parts and checking the obvious already I am tending to lean towards electrical connections or a bad computer with overheating components. It does sound like an electrical problem to me, and it's interesting to see that someone else is having the same problems.

I had a very similar problem with a 93 sport, (I know different components from a 93 to 97) that being said I also thought electrical problem turns out it was actually a fuel pump. Same thing no spark, shrader valve had fuel pressure ect. make sure to check your fuel pressure with an actual gauge it needs to be something like 30+. Could save you some time considering the fuel gauge gets its reading off of the fuel pump assembly, so everything that looks like a electrical problem can also be a fuel problem, and the intermittent starting times make me wonder.. Also the engine control module will show up almost the same way, they are not very expensive you could try changing it and see what happens...

running a 94 wrangler , 37's no lift (high fender conversion), ford 8.8 4.88's posi, lincoln locked in the front...

soon to come 300 doubler ;-) gears gears gears

to computer not a good connection at plug put dielectric grease on plug and looks like its ok so far
