Replace hard drive or buy new?

I have a 2017 27 inch iMac and the hard drive needs to be replaced. The repair shop said they could upgrade to an SSD drive for $500 total. The trade in value is $1100. Would you upgrade or just trade in and buy a new one?

What is the size of your current drive and is it a Fusion Drive setup?

What are you looking for space the same or more?

Hi Dan,

This was the configuration that I got:

4.0GHz quad-core Intel Core i7, Turbo Boost up to 4.2GHz

• 8GB 1867MHz DDR3 SDRAM - two 4GB —I upgraded it myself to 32 GB

• 3TB Fusion Drive

• AMD Radeon R9 M395X with 4GB video memory

The repair shop wants to replace the 3TB HD with a 1TB SSD. I don’t know if it’s worth it to spend around 400-500 for repairs or to trade in my computer at Apple for $1100 credit so I can buy the new iMac. What do you think?

You know you can do this your self if you follow directions to the letter for a lot less!

So here’s the needed part, tools and sundries iMac Intel 27" (Late 2012-2019) SSD Upgrade Kit $260 USD for a 1TB drive. And here’s the guide iMac 27" 2017 Hard Drive Replacement

The hardest part is pulling the display off. Many people use the wrong tools and/or force things. If you follow the guide to the letter you’ll be fine!

I would not do anything with the PCIe blade SSD which is the cache drive to your HDD when you had a Fusion Drive set. Wipe it down and just use it to hold loose files.

that configuration is still very usable. A 1TB SSD will make it seem like a new comouter. They do not cost that much if you install it yourself. About $100. They are not hard to replace as it is all plug-able. But then I am not a MAC person. IMHO, 400-500 is to much to pay.

Don't bother opening up the machine. I would say run an external SSD. Boot up will be almost as fast, cheap fix, no hassles!

Why would you want to be hassled with three items (laptop, drive, and cable) to carry around, connect/disconnect, and subject to damage?
