My copy is poor quality but print is not

I am able to scan and print that scan without any problems. The printed page is clear and legible. However, when I try to copy the page comes out incomplete with missing sections. The scanning part of the printer does not do a smooth scan like it does when simply scanning. It stops and moves back and forth throughout the document rather than doing one clean sweep. Is there a way to fix this?
