New Battery, previously working phone, heats circuits but no display

I bought a new battery and back for my Pixel 3, and installed per the directions. Before putting the back on with the fingerprint sensor and charging coil, I thought I’d test it without those 2 parts. There was no display visible, whether by trying to turn it on or by plugging in a charging cable. The concerning thing is that it heats up the large metal part on the circuit board, so the battery is draining with no display visible before trying to turn it on, with or without the charging cable. Has anyone ever experienced this? Where is the most likely short?

Not 100% on this one but with a lot few android devices, they sometimes won't function correctly unless everything is installed all the way as some of the plastic shielding brackets have sensors and contact pads to make connections. Try installing everything, including the wireless coil and fingerprint sensor, and see if it'll work any better. If not you may be looking at a possible damaged display or board. Double check all the connectors are clean and use some 86% or higher isopropyl alcohol to clean them if not.
