My TV shows a black patch on the right side

Hello,

My TV started to show this dark patch on the right side of the screen just recently.

Every time I turn it on, it displays the image perfectly, but the dark patch appears after a couple seconds.

There’s other rare event that occurs little often after turning on the TV, which consists of displaying a perfect image for around half a minute. Then, the whole image turns extremely dark and doesn’t come back until I turn off and on my TV.

I’ve tried a few things like leaving it unplugged overnight, performing a factory reset and cleaning the boards inside it. I’ve also carefully cleaned the pins of the FPCs.

This TV has a software check option, which apparently doesn’t work. After holding the on button for a few seconds with the TV off, it displays the message “Software file check failed, please unplug then plug the power cord back in, and try again.“ unplugging then plugging doesn’t allow me to do the software check.

@josluis Measure the DC voltages on your power board to the backlight LED (connector P601). Let us know what you are getting on that measurement.

@oldturkey03 - yes, I think if the panel were bad, there would be an indication in the video that was seen when it was dark. One side dark would indicate there was 2 strings of LEDs. If that connector on the board goes to the LEDs then it has 4 wires and would support that. Then if both start going out, that would more point to the PSU. Remote diagnosis is definitely flawed.

@ruggb from, the little bit of information I got, it looks like the panel is a 3 strip backlight

This sounds like a problem with the T-Con board or the main board. I would replace the T-Con board first, as it's cheaper.

I haven't changed the T-Con board yet as I have been looking for the exact same model in my area. The problem with my TV has changed recently in the following way:

Now the whole picture is well illuminated (the problem described in my original post is gone), but the backlight goes in and out every few seconds. While it's out, the sound still works and I can see shapes on the screen using the flashlight trick. This occurs far more often while using netflix or youtube, hardly ever happens while watching regular TV.

The dark side screen would point to a backlight issue. Sounds like that issue has changed but is still a backlight issue. Check your backlight voltage to see if it varies with content.

I am going to take a SWAG and say that the backlight control is the lower left of the power board. Why it varies with content of OTA vs Streaming is a mystery. There appears to be 2 circuits on that connector, the white/black and the red/black wires on that plug. If the video is there all the time, it is a real stretch to blame the T-Con board - but then anything is possible.

@ruggb that is absolutely correct. This sounds like either a backlight strip issue, or a power board issue. If we could only see if there is an image within the black part of the screen. If there is not, then it is a data issue which is usually related to the LCD driver board not receiving that data.

@oldturkey03 - right, given that they see video when it totally blacks out now, I'm leaning toward the PSU. If I could find a schematic for it I could more justify that conclusion.
