MacBook Air 13'' (early 2020) randomly bricks itself

Hi,

I have a problem.

So a few days ago, I was in a call when my Macbook Air (13in, early 2020, intel processor) got bricked. There were no warnings or anything, and the Mac was completely unresponsive. Here’s what I tried:

  1. Reset PRAM & NVRAM (I don’t even know if they were reset, there were no signs whatsoever / didn’t work)
  2. Reset SMC (once again, didn’t work)
  3. Tried to use Diagnostics & Recovery (but the mac wasn’t even on to begin with)

(well, during that day my computer randomly booted up a few times, but it never got past the apple logo & progress bar - it shut down and went back to being unresponsive when the progress bar was running)

The next day I got a new charger & cable, and, well, the Mac booted up successfully and ran (pretty normally) for around 10 minutes (except the display didn’t appear to function properly: a part of the screen just got brighter - which I’m not that concerned about right now), and then shut down and went unresponsive. I took the cases apart, and did some things.

Here’s what I did:

  • disconnected the battery and tried to use my computer with external power (once again, random startups, and the computer shuts down)
  • cleaned the components (like, all of them) (worked for around a day, and, as usual, shut down and went unresponsive.)
  • Applied new thermal paste (didn’t work at all)

I don’t think this is an issue about power because when I plugged the cable in and tried to measure the voltage, things seemed to be fine.

Can anybody help me?

Mac not turning on... (Again!)!)

I think I (kind of) have the same problem as described in this post?

I think the best thing here is to get to an Apple Store to see what they can tell you. From your description I’m suspecting the logic board has an issue.

We're currently in a lockdown, so I can't go to an Apple Store... Any tips to repair the Mac?

@adavocowana - Sadly, this is beyond your (or even my ability) to diagnose and fix as Apple uses a lot of custom parts.

Presently finding a new logic board for this series on the open market is just not possible! 2020 13" MacBook Air - Logic boards

You might be able to ship the system to Apple, give them a call.

@danj Thank you for your reply.

I think I fixed the problem.

After trying all the ways, still not working.

I think the CPU temperature sensor is faulty. Because the cooling system is not good, the computer turns off suddenly. My guess is that in this case, when restarting the computer has to perform a series of tests that lead to the CPU heating up very quickly. And the computer won't boot up.

I put the computer in the fridge for a while. After taking the computer out of the refrigerator, the computer started to boot. It's amazing. However, the computer is very hot. I had to put the ice cube under the computer. And then it runs steadily. It's not hot anymore.

Currently my computer has been running stably for 3 days. Hope it will be fine.

My goofy solution: put it in the fridge. And it worked.

Hope this solution works for everyone as well.

Thanks for your help!

@adavocowana - While that's a workable stop-gap solution, you really need to get your system properly serviced. If you are in Europe many countries have a two year warranty! Your time is running out to get this fixed for free! Otherwise you're on the hook for an expensive part and the labor to put it in.

@danj I completely agree with your opinion.

Unfortunately I'm in Vietnam. And the computer just ran out of warranty.

I am quarantined due to the pandemic.

I will take it to the apple store as soon as I can.
