Display not turning on. Also, Keyboard backlight not working.

I have a 2014 13” MBP that had coffee spilled on it. It will functions except a few keys do not work and the battery will not charge. I recently acquired a 2015MBP with a broken screen so I thought I would swap the screen to the 2015 and see if I could get it running. Since the cables were all the same I gave it a try. It wasn’t until I saw it didn’t work that I did some research and found that the video drivers were different. So I decided to swap it back to the 2014.

Well, now the display doesn’t work on the 2014. It still powers on, chimes and even works with an external display. I’ve checked the cable connections multiple times, did PRAM reset and SMC reset. The other thing is that the keyboard backlight does not work on the 2014. I don’t recall if it did before but is the controller for the keyboard backlight in the display? Could I have fried something in the display? I don’t see any image if I shine a bright light on the screen. So far I have $0 into this so I’m not too worried. I just don’t want to start throwing parts at it that cost me money.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks,
Scott

Ouch!

Yes, the displays connections are not the same Apple altered the pin assignments between 2013/14 display and the 2015.

Maybe its time to locate someone locally that have the deeper skills to clean up the spillage and get things fixed!

Thanks for the info. I’m not really interested in putting anything into this machine if the display doesn’t work. It was given to me for free. If the display worked I was considering buying a new keyboard for it off eBay.

Do you have pinouts for these displays by any chance? Would help me to figure out what I could have fried in the display. I’m surprised they left the connectors the same with different pin configurations. Apple usually takes every chance they get to make something proprietary.

I’m here on ifixit in hopes of finding a solution without spending a bunch of money. Just wish I did more research before swapping the display.

Thanks.

@scottgriz - What you'll want then is the schematics and board view drawings for each of the systems.

Here the info to find them: 13" MacBook Pro Retina A1502

Late 2013.2014 - Board number is 820-3536

Early 2015 - Board number is 820-4924

Unless you know how to read them and know how to use a DVM they won't help you.
