MacBook Pro 2014 doesn't recognize Kingston NV1 SSD

Hi guys.

I have the MBP mentioned in the title, and I've been facing a problem for a few days: the SSD (m.2 nvme Kingston NV1 500GB) is not recognized by the machine.

When I open the installer's Disk Utility (either through Internet Recovery or from the thumb drive), the disk does not appear. I go to the Terminal and give the "diskutil list", and nothing appears there either.

I bought two adapters that are very popular and recommended by other consumers. Because of the problem, I returned the first one thinking it was a problem with him and got another one, from another model, from another seller. It didn't work either.

With this second adapter (which is what I have now), I took another SSD (m.2 SATA) that has Windows installed and put it on to see if it recognized it. Unsuccessfully.

I read that it could be outdated NVME SSD firmware, and as I was booting from it in Internet Recovery, there was no way to update it. I put the OS on the flash drive, and still nothing changed.

Considering that (1) I changed the adapter twice and (2) I put in two different SSDs (I couldn't test NVME on another machine, but I bought brand new from an authorized seller; SATA works), I think the problem can only be in the my machine.

I reset the SMC and NVRAM every time, and nothing changed. Today I have Big Sur installed (ie the Boot ROM is up to date (System Firmware Version: 432.60.3.0.0)).

Any idea what should I do?

I will look for the pinout map and test the voltage on both the adapter and the SSD.

Thanks for the tip about searching Google first, and I'm sorry it sounds like I didn't do that. All the alternatives I tried came from the research I did, but I see that it wasn't enough. What additional information can I provide that would help?

I also haven't seen anyone talking about this SSD's compatibility with macOS - for better or worse. I didn't test the OWC SSD because the price here where I am is prohibitive (with shipping + customs fees it goes to almost USD 300 for the most basic 480GB disk - USD 99).

I have seen this situation in other cases. However, as I am on Big Sur (newer than Mojave), it seems to me that this action would not have any effect. Do you agree?

I will help you to assist in your repair (I just got back from a camp so i am slightly tired).

First thing, have you reinstalled the original SSD back in and tested. If this is the case and it worked then your MBP has magically got some kind of locked down thing.

If not tho then seems like voltages aren't getting even close to that Proprietary SSD connector port. If that is the case check the voltages.

Just quickly, going onto google and grabbing some more info helps people like me and others diagnose these things quicker. I don't blame you for this but it's always a good idea.

Back to this repair, my research shows nothing about mac compatibility on their website. This is quite unfortunate because it may be incompatible. have you tried an OWC drive yet?

Sadly, you're caught in never-never land! The version of macOS your system is running uses an older version of firmware which doesn't have the needed services to support PCIe/NVMe drives. You'll need to put back your Apple SSD and then upgrade the OS of the system to Mojave or newer so the firmware is upgraded with APFS support. Once that's done you can use your PCIe/NVNe SSD as the needed services are now present and you will also need to install Mojave or newer to the new drive as well.

I recommend while you've got your system running one more time with the Apple SSD download Mojave from here How to get old versions of macOS and following this guide How to create a bootable macOS Mojave installer drive or https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT201372 to setup a bootable USB 32GB thumb drive. Make sure you've formatted the drive with a journaled file system. before to proceed.

@gabe_willow - I personally don't recommend using M.2 SSD in Mac's. Don't get me wrong! I love M.2 SSD's I've got a few External RAID setups with them.

Sadly Apple did their own thing. I either use Apple drives or OWC and thats it! So I know thats not the news you want to hear thats what I can tell you.

As far as macOS I would still setup the external OS installer to see if booting up with it allows you to access the SSD, you maybe facing the wrong format issue. As you tried using Windows which uses exFAT or NTFS where Mac's use HFS+ or in your case APFS which sits on top of GUID partition.

From my experience Kingston NV1 M.2's do not work in macs even with the right adapter. I use any samsung M.2 ssd with the correct adapter and I have a100% success rate. (970 EVO's SSD 980's, etc) Try a Samsung with the correct adapter. For a detailed answer what model is the machine exactly? Hopefully by now you have solved the problem. Is it one of the following A1502 A1398 (MGX72 MGX82 MGX92 MGXA2 MGXC2)? I did post earlier but my post seems to have been removed!

Hi, I have a MacBook Pro 15 inch Retina mid 2014, A1398 and I tried to upgrade the hard drive a few years ago. I cannot remember the brand hard drive I used but whatever it was I was unsuccessful and gave up and put my original hard drive back in. Today, I am wanting to attempt to upgrade again and I bought a KingSpec NVMe (NA900S) off of Amazon that claimed it is compatible with my MacBook, however, I am getting the same issue. My MacBook acts like the new hard drive is not even there. So, once again I am frustrated. I have Big Sur 11.7.10 installed on my MacBook when using the original hard drive so I am pretty sure I do not have a firmware/driver issue going on here. I am starting to think that I have a voltage issue happening here. Your post was encouraging about the advice on trying with a Samsung M.2 with the correct adapter, I looked around and found a Samsung - 970 EVO Plus 2TB, from Best Buy, store SKU number 6347286. Just wish someone would post with a similar situation and a confirmed solution
