Replacment battery doesn't charge

I have an LG GRAM 17" notebook. I have tried replacing the battery on 4 different occasions with different batteries obtained from EBAY. The battery will not charge past 15 or 16% in each case. I made sure to order a battery this time that was advertised as an OEM battery. Same thing. I put in my original battery it charges fully but doesn't last as long as it should. I tried unplugging the battery, starting up the noteook and then deleting from device manager the battery apps. I then shut down and unplugged the machine. Unplugged the battery and held down the power on key for 30 seconds. Replugged in battery, rebooted to no avail. None of this has worked. It seems it will ONLY recognize the original battery. What can I do?

This is written in early 2026.

Richard, I'm an electrical engineer in the US in similar circumstances. My LG Gram 17 from Costco in 2020 has a failing 80 watt battery. None of the 3rd party batteries sold on the internet will work in it, only the original LG battery that was shipped in the laptop.

After posting on reddit I concluded that LG changed Gram 17's design before my unit was constructed to require batteries supplied only by LG. Said differently, the computer after a certain manufacturing year digitally handshakes with its battery to determine the maker. The laptop disallows any non-LG batteries.

I suspect that the very credibly designed Gram batteries sold on the internet were at one time compatible with LG Gram computers, but not more recent ones. These online sellers are not sufficiently informed to know that, and advertise that their batteries work on all LG Grams. They don't.

It would be nice if the computer's screen bluntly announced "this battery isn't compatible with your computer and so I will ignore it" but doing so would probably put LG afoul of "right to repair" laws enacted recently in many states.
