Why is my laptop having power on issues after battery replacement?

I replaced the battery in my laptop by following a YouTube tutorial and everything was fine for 24 hours. I could see the cycle count reset to 1 after a full charge, but now the battery isn’t even recognized in system information and the laptop will not work without being connected to the power adapter. I found this out by opening the laptop expecting the screen to immediately light up and after pressing the power button a few times and hearing the chimes for only the first few presses, I plugged it in. So basically, what did I mess up? Considering it worked for 24 hours I’m at a loss. I was trying to not have to dish out $1500 and rather just the $120 for the battery but will I now be out the sum of both?

@danj

Also, in doing this, I realized how laggy and slow my laptop now is, if that helps!

Let’s get a better view of things, install this gem of an app! CoconutBattery take a snapshot of the apps main window and post it here for us to see Adding images to an existing question

@danj I received the replacement battery today, but now the old one is starting to charge again! Should I continue with the replacement?

OK thats very helpful!

So we can tell SMC is working, but it's not getting any data from the battery! This is a bad battery, the micro controller within it has failed.

Because SMC has lost access to the thermal sensors within the battery, SMC is in CPU safe mode which is where the SMC lowers the CPU's clocking and ramps up the fans RPM to prevent the CPU from getting overheated.

I would talk to the battery seller to get a new battery and/or get your money back to then get a replacement from another source. The Unibody A1278 battery is getting hard to find new (fresh) so be careful as there are a few sellers who glop two older batteries together to make a good working one.

@danj wow thank you for that! So it’s 100% the battery and not the connector, right?

I actually selected the wrong laptop in the forum…mine is a mid-2014 A1502. Perhaps something went wrong with the handling when I was installing it. Ifixit is offering to send a new one for free so I will take them up on it and be extra extra careful during installation.

@jennygee17 - I corrected you model info. Not likely damaged in the install process if you followed this guide MacBook Pro 13" Retina Display Mid 2014 Battery Replacement Using a metal tool to disconnect the battery connector is really the only thing that you could have done (use the plastic spudger) I often see SMC blown if it gets shorted out.. In any case you need a fresh battery once installed run CoconutBattery again you should see values not NaN values.

Post a snapshot again while its under charge so we can see what is happening.

@danj definitely no metal was used to disconnect, just my fingers!

Personal opinion on replacing the battery again on this model or upgrading to the currently available $999 MacBook Air? I didn’t want to take this route necessarily but now I’m disheartened with the way things have transpired.

tarafından

@jennygee17 - I would still make the effort, then you could sell it if you want to make the jump. I have to admit the $999 Apple M1 Chip with 8-Core CPU and 7-Core GPU with 256GB Storage is tempting! Keep in mind this is not expandable after purchase! 256GB is a bit light for me just answering questions here. So think through what your use case is. If you are just a writer and work online then it likely will be enough. But if you have a sizable music library or work with large data sets you might need more storage.

Thanks again, @danj! I’ll give it one more shot with the battery. Thankfully, I exclusively use a 1 terabyte external hard drive to store everything on and generally just use the laptop for web browsing and miscellaneous small excel sheets.

That appears to be a 2008 13" Core 2 Duo. Entirely possible that something else has failed, unrelated to the battery. Or, perhaps you got a bad battery (which is a strong possibility from what you say). Suggest putting the old battery back in to see if it is recognized in System Profile.

Unfortunately the old battery is not functional after me scraping it out of the casing with an old credit card. Also may have chosen the wrong MacBook here, mine’s a mid-2014 A1502. I double checked that the battery sent was compatible, but I will say seating the battery into the connector was very difficult. I even removed and reseated it in an attempt to troubleshoot and nearly broken some of the plastic because it feels too tight. Thought it was just because it was new at first, but do you think that could be a contributor to the problem at hand?

Hi @jennygee17. This sounds like in the "Silicon lottery (This really isn't silicon but let's call it that)" You got unlucky and ended up with a bad one. If this is the case then let the manufacturer/retailer know and they should replace it free of charge (Under consumer law which is Australia only (Your country may be different please check beforehand)).

The other possibility is that one of the pins (or multiple) Have shorted creating an untraceable short. Check if 1 or more pins are shorted together to see if maybe the connector went kapoof.

There are some other steps you can try that apply to any repair:

Did you try reseating?

Did you try unplugging and replugging multiple other things

Had anything previously happened to the laptop (Issues I.E firmware)

Did anything change after the battery replacement (EG Software updates etc)

I'm sure there are many more steps i could list here but I am out the door very soon so i don't have time.

Kind Regards

Hi @np_f1_2021! Thanks for your response! Are you saying the battery that was sent to me was bad? I have tried reseating with no luck, and nothing else had changed since it recognizing the battery and not - just a few hours passed. I bought the battery from ifixit so I will contact customer service and see what they say. Although I’m not looking forward to replacing the battery again. It’s very difficult to separate the battery from the casing because of the adhesive but alas…

@jennygee17 - Any luck with getting CoconutBattery installed? Seeing the output from it would give me the ability to help you.

tarafından

@danj how would that be able to diagnose my battery health if my laptop doesn’t recognize the battery?
