Is faulty MacBook screen related to lack of a grounding clip

On the iFixit guide to replace screen on MackBook 12” 2015 it says:-

“2015 models have a silver grounding clip with two foam pads directly under this screw“

When talking about the screw holding the battery connector down.

I have a 2015 MacBook & the grounding clip is not there!

I’m using this guide to investigate why there are lines on screen & or darker screen at certain angles of opening it. Also a background ghosting effect on screen too. Here're images of these issues.

No obvious damage or loose connectors that I can see /locate so wondered if the lack of grounding clip can cause these symptoms?

There is a dent on the back/side of base, evidencing it has been dropped before but no damage on the screen or case around the screen.

Anybody out there know about the grounding clip or other reason these symptoms would be happening?

With there being no obvious damage, could it be a faulty LCD connector cable? - seen those for under £10.

I also get a message about battery needing service - it doesn’t hold charge for long, could that be related to the grounding clip? Here's a screenshot of battery info.

Thanks

If you are referencing Step 12 in this guide Retina MacBook 2015 Display Assembly Replacement that doesn't effect the screen its part of the batteries power connection. The plate is part of the logic side connection, its not a loose piece so unless someone forcefully removed it, it should be present and its needed to compress the contacts via the screw.

Ahhh that makes sense.

So the grounding clip is under the plate not under the head of the screw as it makes out on the guide.

I had come across a clip on an older black MacBook with a grounding clip under a screw so thought that was what it referred to.

I wonder who to contact to amend the guide to reflect that?

@nijafe - You can post a note within the guide. Just be careful you are not assuming the construction of a different model/series biases your viewpoint.

I personally don't see any need here as the images clearly lays out the action and the pieces.

Thanks Dan but I just re-read it, full quote is below & it does say the clip is a loose part.

So either the guide is wrong as you say it’s fixed to the underside of the plate OR to see if it’s come loose I need to lift the logic board off.

I also get a message about battery needing service - it doesn’t hold charge for long, could that be related to the grounding clip?

“2015 models have a silver grounding clip with two foam pads directly under this screw, which may come loose. Be sure to reinstall it during reassembly”

@nijafe - Is the clip missing?

At this point to focus on the battery issue I would install CoconutBattery take a snapshot of the apps main window and post it here for us to see Adding images to an existing question

As to your problem:

Vertical lines = Signal line damage - Which can be the data ribbon cable is damaged, the interface of the cable to the LCD panel (breakdown of the bonding) or the LCD panels glass is cracked either visibly within the top sheet or micro fractures within the back side sheet where the metal oxide traces which brings the signals to the discreet pixel cell.

Screen is darker when moved - Within the display assembly is a light bar (backlight) which illuminates the LCD from the back side. It is feed power via a ribbon cable which can be damaged so the connections are making and breaking as you move the display assembly.

Most of the time one or two of the light strings connections break as the strings are interwoven we often see the Stage Light effect which is what the MacBook Pro's faced in FlexGate as the ribbon cable was not long enough and the stress caused the lines to break.

The bottomline here is you have either a damaged cable or display assembly. The drop or bang hit at the worse possible place along the hinge space damaging the ribbon cable MacBook 12" Retina (Early 2015-2017) Display Cable and might have also damaged the LCD screen as well MacBook 12" Retina (Early 2015-2017) Display Assembly
