The Early 2009 Mac Pro—also known as the Mac Pro 4,1—introduced Intel's Nehalem architecture to Apple's line of professional desktop computers in March 2009. The Mac Pro 5,1 used the same interior design but received further CPU updates in 2010 and 2012.

Which GPU for Photoshop/Premiere/FinalCut

Hi guys,

I like to upgrade MP 5.1 to Mojave but I need GPU with metal support. But there are some specs what I have to follow:

  • no PSU modification
  • full Apple support (include boot screen)
  • ideally only 1 slot GPU (but this is not so important)
  • need run Photoshop/Premiere/FinalCut/WoW :)

I was following Apple GPU support list but turn out that not all GPUs from this list support boot screen :(

Does anyone have personal experience ?

Thanks a lot for ideas/recommendation.

Hi

If you want a metal supported gpu with a boot screen you will have to have a custom firmware flashed into the gpu or you could use my other solution

My other solution is to use 2GPUs

Your Mac Pro has 2 slots that have 16lanes (that means you can have 2big gpus in them)

Block Image

(If you look carefully you can see that it says X16 on both of them)

So what I would do here is get a good gpu that doesn’t need psu modifications like the RX570 or 580 and put that in one slot then get a gpu that does have a boot screen like the GT120(Mac edition) and put than in the other X16 slot you have

I recommend using the GT120 as it won’t need any power cables as it will run of if the pci power

You will also need 2 monitors for this to work unless you want to swap your display cable over every time you want to use the boot screen

Then you should be all set to go!

You could use the GTX680(Mac edition) as if you get the right one it will have a boot screen but it’s a little old or you could get one that is flashed

The decision is yours so it’s up to you:-)

Hopefully this helps

Any questions please ask

Thanks:-)

I was think about this option, but I read somewhere that if you want install macOS Mojave you need have all GPU in MP with Metal Support. Is that true ?

@roboscrap

As far as I know it is but iv seen people do a work around

What they do is they don’t put the GT120 in until they have updated to Mojave

Once they are in Mojave they put it back in:-)

tarafından

@hellomacos this work if you are installing macOS from old one but I like to get clean install so need boot screen :(

@roboscrap

I see

You could use a GTX680(Mac edition)

That what I have in my Mac Pro and despite its age it doesn’t really struggle with much and I have a boot screen

Or if you have another Mac you could preload a fresh install into a HDD or a SSD then install it into the Mac Pro:-)

@hellomacos The MP have RAID card so unfortunately preload is not possible.
