2017 MBP with flickering display, image retention, and harsh whites.

I was recently given a 2017 13" MacBook Pro (non Touch Bar) from a client. The computer is in excellent condition, though there seems to be some issues with the display. Physically it's OK, but there are some obvious flickering issues, image retention, and backgrounds with whites are pretty harsh. Also the rest of the display's colours seem slightly off.

I reformatted the machine and upgraded from High Sierra to Monterey. That didn't solve anything and I didn't expect it to. The screen looks better on Monterey because you can use dark mode, but that doesn't actually solve any of the issues mentioned above.

Here are some pictures I took with my phone of the display:

Sorry for the quality of the pictures; Nothing I can do about that. You can see the obvious image retention and issues with text on white backgrounds. You can also see the blown out whites on the High Sierra background. That said, the phone camera makes the rest of the colours look worse than they are.

Any ideas of what could be wrong? My guess is the machine got dropped and something internal like a flex cable is broken.

Sadly, your internal display logic is having issues. To double check plug in an external display to see if the issue is present on it, if not you’ll need a new display assembly MacBook Pro 13" Retina (Late 2016-2017) Display Assembly and here’s the guide to replace it MacBook Pro 13" Function Keys 2017 Display Assembly Replacement

You can see, on the MBP display, the skin tones are oversaturated in orange. Also in the picture with the fridge, it's almost completely orange when it should be white.

I checked the price of the display assembly you linked and at $500, I just don't think it's worth it. This machine is already 5 years old, and this model was notorious for the failing keyboard. That has happened yet, but it certainly could. I just don't see the point of spending that kind of money when more things could fail. The MBP's display is not pretty, but it is certainly usable.

It's a shame the whole display needs to be replaced. I was hoping a flex or ribbon cable replacement was an option, seeing how there is no physical damage to the screen.

@fml - it really a small circuit board that hangs off the display where the issue is it’s called theT-CON it converts the signal from the main bard to what the LCD needs sadly Apple didn’t design this as a replaceable part

While the butterfly keyboard is the more common failure on this series, it’s still a good system. I still use my 2012 15” MacBook Pro just for web activities.

If you’re set don’t forget to score the answer and accept it, thanks!

@danj - Thanks Dan.

@fml - I have the exact same issue on the same model MBP. Has the issue gotten worse? What did you end up doing about it?

@hodin - Sorry guy, time for a new display assembly.
