Broken on/off button after spill in unibody MacBook Pro 17

Hello,

I have a almost brand new MacBook Pro Unibody 3.06Ghz. Someone (of course not me!!) spilled some coffee in the keyboard. Now the on/off button does not work. Now this is a Norwegian keyboard with layout like Spanish. I moved the logic board to another MBP 17" so the logic board is ok and the problem is the top case. It is not possible (as far as I know) to get parts for the top case and a new one cost over $300.

So does anyone have suggestion as how to try to fix this? Nothing happens when I press the on/off button.

I have opened the top case and confirmed that the on/off button has some liquid damage. If I only could get hold of that tiny button I think I could fix this. It seems completely hopeless to have to replace the whole top just because of a tiny button. It comes out easily with 2 screws. Anyone know where I could look to get this small button/switch?

I have no idea where to get a Norwegian one except from a Norwegian Apple dealer. You can install it youself.

This is the most protected mac I've ever seen against spillage. According to the liquid you may be able to clean it right up. For the keys, use a small flat head screw driver to gently lift up the key from the backside until you can get a fingernail under it and lift till it pops off. Carefully examine how the scissor plastic key retainer is positioned . Look at the bottom of the key to see how it snaps into it. Lift the sides of the retainer on both right and left side to observe how it works. Take the retainer out and put it back in to understand it. The major problem is getting those little bitty plastic pins into the holes. I use a plastic toothpick to lift and separate inserted from the right. I use iisopropyl alcohol on a Q-tip to clean. Do not use rubbing alcohol as it contains to much water.

Thanks. I know I can get the part but would try of course to fix this myself. What about the power button? What would you do to fix that?

Did you check with an Ohm meter if it shows a short, there may be liquid still in it, if so use some WD40 and spray it and let it dry a little and reinstall and check it.
