Shift Key not working After Battery Replacement

Good evening. I am new to asking questions on the forum so please pardon my lack of knowledge on this website.

I have an Early 2015 Mac Book Pro that I just replaced the battery in. Everything went swell. I closed everything up and tried booting it and it went into “safe boot” mode. I tried logging in but kept saying my password was wrong. Using the “reset password using apple id” I determined that it is almost as if the left shift key is being held down. I ordered a new ribbon off of amazon and replaced it, still to no difference. The mac refuses to take a charge which I believe I need to reset the SMC - booting holding option, control, shift, or something like that. I am unable to do so to allow it to take a charge, because I cannot regularly boot it, without the shift key.

Edit: By unplugging the ribbon for the keyboard I was able to rest the SMC, now all I need to do is find out how to fix the left shift.

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. I am not new to opening up apple devices but I am new to the battery replacement and on a mac. I did follow instructions step by step through the replacement.

Thank you all.

I do not know why a battery replacement caused a shift key issue, maybe a voltage issue or something like that, but you could try unplugging the Internal keyboard and using an external one for normal boot and SMC reset.

@suaru I tired removing the ribbon for the keyboard / track pad and using external keyboard. The Mac now accepts a charge and I can use it with keyboard and mouse. I practically have a portable Mac Mini.

Still however, I would like for the shift key to work but this fixes my worry about the battery dying before I get a chance to reset it so I can charge it. Is it possible to be the individual key itself - Maybe the isopropyl alcohol from removing the adhesive got into it?

I believe on the original boot it worked fine except the trackpad wasn’t working. After cleaning the ribbon up the trackpad worked but the left shift went bad.

What did you use to clean the ribbon? The isopropyl alcohol from removing the battery could have damaged the membrane in that area of the keyboard.

If possible, try to see if you can get to the keyboard, but that might be beyond your skill level as I think that requires a fully removal of the motherboard.

@suaru

You mean to get to the keyboard from the bottom instead of removing the individual key?

@Ryan Kvech

I don't think removing the keycap is a good idea, they aren't very easy to get back in place and you can easily break the mechanism.

If you meant the key switches, in a MacBook membrane keyboard there are no removable switches.
