iPod not be recognized by computer (windows) and will not charge.

My computer will not recognize the iPod when plugged in.

Wall charger light immediately turns off off when plugged into iPod then turns back on when disconnected from iPod.

iPod works perfectly fine when listening and changing songs.

It is almost as if I have something wrong with the connection piece on the actual iPod, but I am not sure.

Kevin, have you tried a different USB cord? Check the dock connector, make sure that the pins are not bend, broken, or corroded. It does sound like a connection is short circuiting.

Sounds like you have a duff dock connector that has shorted pins or other damage. The Dock connector is soldered to the logic board so replacement will require removal of the logic board and suitable soldering skills.

It would be worth careful examination of the dock connector as perhaps there is something in it - lint/dust corrosion causing the problem. Carefully clean with a toothpick or other non metallic device. If you disassemble - check the solder joints on the dock connector for signs of corrosion between them as well as cracked/broken solder joints

The dock connector is available separately - Google is your friend :)

Thanks for responding. I believe my problem is the dock connector. When I put the wall charger connector in iPod connector it will start charging. However I have to hold it in very tight and not move it. Once it moves at all the iPod loses connection to the charger. I have been told from a few online repair shops (rapid repair, iresq) that no matter what i will have to get the logic board replaced and there is a 50% chance I will lose my songs. They also want about 130$ plus shipping to fix it. Does this sound correct to you guys? I plan on taking it to an apple store but I am not sure if they can do anything different.

Kevin, sounds a bit steep. You can buy a logic board from here and purchase a Zif-to-USB adapter on places like ebay.com and still safe plenty of money. Copy your files from your iPod hard drive with the adapter, replace the logic board using these guides. You will have to restore the iPod once you replace the logic board. Of course, you can also replace the dock connector like Richdave suggested, if you have experience in soldering very small parts. Good Luck
