Hi Maria,
Yes, a crack in the screen can definitely indicate a problem with the digitizer (touch screen) that can result in the behavior you're seeing. The only real solution is to replace the screen. This is something you can do yourself, but Apple has put in a couple of booby traps for anyone who isn't an Apple Authorized Service Center.
First, you will get a pop-up warning for a week or so that your screen may not be genuine - whether it's a genuine Apple screen or not. After that there will still be a warning flagged in your Settings to that same effect. This is due to the screen being paired to the logic board using an Apple proprietary encryption algorithm.
Second, you will lose the True Tone and Auto Brightness functions. Not 100% sure about the Auto Brightness, but True Tone can be restored by copying a piece of data from the old screen onto the new one. This requires a specialized device programmer; most reputable repair shops should have one by now, otherwise they start at about $60 USD.
Here's the repair guide should you want to tackle this yourself.
