backlight goes out after a couple of seconds

My LCD screen has a problem. When I open the computer, the screen lights up for about 2 or 3 seconds, then goes black. The screen is still on but dark. I took it in to a shop and they claimed they tested it with a new inverter. They said it needed either a replacement LCD or it was on the logic board.

Does this sound right?

I have hooked the computer up to an external screen and it works fine. That's why I don't think it's the logic board. The folks at the shop seem to think it's the LCD screen itself. It seems to me that the backlight would either work or not. They claimed to me that the circuit can "fail" when it heats up, which happens very quickly.

I remain skeptical. I don't mind putting a new LCD into the computer, but I don't want to do that unless I know it will fix the issue.

I just tried resetting the SMC as suggested. That did not appear to resolve the issue.

I bought an inverter and replaced it. The problem was NOT fixed. I then reset the SMC and the problem was fixed. Boy to I feel stupid now!

On the MacBook with removable battery,

1. Unplug and remove battery.

2. Hold Power button for >5 seconds.

3. Insert Battery, plug in and boot.

See Apple Support pages for resetting SMC on non-removable battery machines.

Thanks so much for that boxav8r. I had all my tools laid out ready to change the inverter and cable. I decided to read one last forum and found this. My screen did exactly the same thing, I removed battery and reset SMC and now it is fine. THANKYOU

Hook it up to an external monitor to test the logic board. It does sound like an inverter or inverter cable to me.

The inverter we're talking about is part of the main logic bd. It increases the voltage to power the florescent lamps inside your display (newer systems use LED's and use a different type of circuit to power them).

I think you thought we were talking about the AC power unit (in Europe often called an inverter), not the same thing.

actually referring to the inverter board that goes under the clutch panel on the Mac book 13" core 2 duo.

Took about 2.5 hours to disassemble and replace the board. Older LCD machines like this have an inverter that plugs into the mother board and the LCD. I understand that the newer machines have integrated motherboard and inverter. Ouch.
